Joey Potter was not what one would call well adjusted to life on this island. She spent most of her time holed away, sometimes talking to Pacey but mostly alone.  However, growing up near the creek she knew that when the weather was hot the best place to be was near the water.  So Joey Potter threw on the coolest outfit she had and braved the ( Read more... )

Jess was still blessed with just that one ridiculous bikini to work with, no matter how much she coaxed the box, but the yellow polka dots were a little easier to bear when paired with the cutoff shorts that, unbeknownst to Jess, Joey was so coveting.

"How's the water?" she called out when she saw someone splashing straight into it ahead of her.

Joey looked at the blond girl and felt the bile come up inside of her. Girls that pretty were always cruel, heartless and petty and Joey didn't expect any different in the new location.

"Cold." Joey's voice was blunt and uninviting. And that would have been the end of it except Joey noticed the shorts and though she loathed the sort of young women who talked of nothing but clothes she felt compelled to ask.

"Where did you find shorts on this island?" Joey felt dirty even asking the question.

"I figure they were the box's apology for the swimsuit," said Jess, smiling at her in spite of the tone and heading for the water. In this kind of heat, cold was just what she was looking for. "They weren't much to look at as jeans, but once I took a pair of scissors to them we got along just fine."

Joey scowled a bit more, figured this girl would get exactly what Joey needed while she was stuck looking like a guest at a tea party.

"The suit is pretty hideous." She didn't sound friendly but the words were a sort of truce - Joey was willing to give the girl half a chance, if nothing else for admitting that the bathing suit was ridiculous.

When the day broke and the heat seemed ready to continue unabated, Lucy thought that swimming was likely the best of ideas. It didn't surprise her to see another girl running into the water. Her towel and sandals left on the sand, she tore off her dress as she ran down to the surf, letting it fall where it may. "It's lovely, isn't it?" She called out to the girl with a smile.

Joey looked at the girl with a raised eyebrow, as though someone communicating with her was a foreign concept.

"Lovely, right." Her voice was annoyed with a touch of amusement. Lovely was not a regular word in Joey Potter's over extensive vocabulary.

It was in Lucy's, too pleased at finally being in the water to notice any annoyance. "So hot today. I hope it doesn't keep on like this. Last year it snowed all December."

Joey rose an eyebrow in disbelief. "It snowed. Here? This place doesn't look like it's ever seen a rainy day, let alone snow."

Other than the Compound, which is getting crowded in all this heat, the only place on the Island that is bearable in this heat wave is the beach, so I've spent a lot more time there. I move slowly just below the wave-line, letting the water wash over my toes.

So I can't help but grin as I see someone streak past me and go dashing into the ocean, clothes and all.

"You can't get out that way," I called.

"You're telling me that this heatwave is going to follow me into the water?" Joey's voice raised with anger as she looked toward the new girl. She shook her head in frustration.

"My mistake," I said, raising my eyebrows. "I thought you were trying to leave the Island. And you _can't_ get out that way. They built a boat here and tried that, apparently. But the heat? The ocean sounds like a good plan."

Joey glared briefly, before speaking in a tone that was harsh and a bit curious. Joey wouldn't deny that perhaps the stranger had more information than Pacey. "I was under the impression that there was no way to get off this island and that we were for all intensive purposes prisoners, which frankly is a bit too much like Australia for my liking. Did I misunderstand the situation, is there a route one can take to leave this tropical confinement because while I don't mind it yet, one day I may be ready to depart and if you know a way I'd really appreciate it."

"Well if it isn't my favorite roommate, Joey Potter," he announced to her as though she didn't know her name, his tone heavy on the sarcasm.

"I see still no luck with the clothes box. Far be it for me to complain when it has such obviously good taste. You look downright ladylike," he teased, knowing that frolicking on the beach in this weather in a sundress was pretty much the last thing that would ever be on her to-do list.

"Pacey I feel pretty ridiculous so do you think you can spare the theatrics for five minutes and join me in the water, unless island life has cured you of your natural tendency to move beyond societies standards and you're suddenly worried about getting your clothes wet." A hand was on her hip as she looked out at him.

He smiled and laughed at her taunt. "Well first of all, you don't look ridiculous," he said sincerely this time. Whether or not she wanted to be wearing the sundress was immaterial, she looked radiant.

"And secondly, ..." he started then stopped short as he sprinted into the ocean. He dove under the water a few feet out. When he resurfaced, he had a big grin on his face and water dripped from his now thoroughly soaked clothes. "Still breaking societal standards."

Joey had been about protest his initial comment when Pacey ran into the water and act like the boy she'd always known. There was something about the water that made Joey feel just a few years younger. She swam over to him, face lit up in a grin.

"See, now that's the Pacey that I know and loathe."
