Joey Potter was not what one would call well adjusted to life on this island. She spent most of her time holed away, sometimes talking to Pacey but mostly alone.  However, growing up near the creek she knew that when the weather was hot the best place to be was near the water.  So Joey Potter threw on the coolest outfit she had and braved the ( Read more... )

Jess was still blessed with just that one ridiculous bikini to work with, no matter how much she coaxed the box, but the yellow polka dots were a little easier to bear when paired with the cutoff shorts that, unbeknownst to Jess, Joey was so coveting.

"How's the water?" she called out when she saw someone splashing straight into it ahead of her.

Joey looked at the blond girl and felt the bile come up inside of her. Girls that pretty were always cruel, heartless and petty and Joey didn't expect any different in the new location.

"Cold." Joey's voice was blunt and uninviting. And that would have been the end of it except Joey noticed the shorts and though she loathed the sort of young women who talked of nothing but clothes she felt compelled to ask.

"Where did you find shorts on this island?" Joey felt dirty even asking the question.

"I figure they were the box's apology for the swimsuit," said Jess, smiling at her in spite of the tone and heading for the water. In this kind of heat, cold was just what she was looking for. "They weren't much to look at as jeans, but once I took a pair of scissors to them we got along just fine."

Joey scowled a bit more, figured this girl would get exactly what Joey needed while she was stuck looking like a guest at a tea party.

"The suit is pretty hideous." She didn't sound friendly but the words were a sort of truce - Joey was willing to give the girl half a chance, if nothing else for admitting that the bathing suit was ridiculous.

"I should probably be thankful it wasn't also itsy bitsy and teeny weeny," said Jess ruefully, looking down at the admittedly bikini top. "You should see what it gave me when I was trying to find something to play baseball in."

Reaching the water, she dipped her toes in the surf and sighed in relief.

"This is all it gives me," Joey gestured down to the sundress which was now not only sticking to her with ocean water, but had become a bit see through. "I hate dresses." Joey explained, lest the girl think she enjoyed looking like some lovely young lady or worse, rich.

"Well," said Jess, trying to find a bright side. She would've worn the dress in a heartbeat, but for someone who didn't like dresses it was downright girly. "I guess it could be giving you something completely useless, like a winter parka. This place needs some kind of swap meet. Everyone brings what the clothing box gave them and trade it around till everyone finds something they're actually willing to wear. Maybe someone would've wanted that ridiculous cone bra it tried to give me."

Joey blinked. "It gave you a cone bra?" Joey wondered if it was a better plan to just keep rewashing the clothes she arrived in. Sure they were better suited for cold weather but it didn't sound like she was going to get anything decent, well, ever. "You're right, someone would want the dresses it gives me and I'm sure someone has some jeans they can surrender."

"Like I was Madonna getting ready for her Blonde Ambition tour," said Jess, shaking her head and finally getting close enough for a proper introduction. "Hey, I'm Jess."
