Joey Potter was not what one would call well adjusted to life on this island. She spent most of her time holed away, sometimes talking to Pacey but mostly alone.  However, growing up near the creek she knew that when the weather was hot the best place to be was near the water.  So Joey Potter threw on the coolest outfit she had and braved the ( Read more... )

"Well if it isn't my favorite roommate, Joey Potter," he announced to her as though she didn't know her name, his tone heavy on the sarcasm.

"I see still no luck with the clothes box. Far be it for me to complain when it has such obviously good taste. You look downright ladylike," he teased, knowing that frolicking on the beach in this weather in a sundress was pretty much the last thing that would ever be on her to-do list.

"Pacey I feel pretty ridiculous so do you think you can spare the theatrics for five minutes and join me in the water, unless island life has cured you of your natural tendency to move beyond societies standards and you're suddenly worried about getting your clothes wet." A hand was on her hip as she looked out at him.

He smiled and laughed at her taunt. "Well first of all, you don't look ridiculous," he said sincerely this time. Whether or not she wanted to be wearing the sundress was immaterial, she looked radiant.

"And secondly, ..." he started then stopped short as he sprinted into the ocean. He dove under the water a few feet out. When he resurfaced, he had a big grin on his face and water dripped from his now thoroughly soaked clothes. "Still breaking societal standards."

Joey had been about protest his initial comment when Pacey ran into the water and act like the boy she'd always known. There was something about the water that made Joey feel just a few years younger. She swam over to him, face lit up in a grin.

"See, now that's the Pacey that I know and loathe."

He laughed. "I hate to disappoint," he said, turning mischievous. He grabbed her around the waist and waited for the kicking and protests against being dunked he knew she'd put forth.

The kicking and protests came, along with some splashing in the face. Joey thrashed about, laughing all the while. "Pacey stop! Pacey what are you doing? PACEEEEEEEEEEY!" It was as though they were twelve again, maybe eleven.

And like they were back at home instead of some strange tropical island where they only knew each other and were orphans.

He didn't answer her rhetorical question, only sinking under the water with the both of them.

Joey escaped his clutches, cursing her dress for making it more difficult to move. She swam to the surface waiting for Pacey with a mock disapproving look on her face.
