Wednesday didn't believe in anyone else deciding her fate, particularly not someone with a wheel. It was unsettling even just sitting there unmanned in the corner of the room, with all of its bright colours and neat handwriting and clearly delineated tasks. If a person wasn't careful, they could be ruled by the wheel with no means of escape ( Read more... )

Jane had been polishing off some of the dishes that she often used and was drying her hands as she wandered into the rec room for a bout of music when she discovered Miss Wednesday, looking particularly crafty. "Whatever are you doing?" Jane asked curiously, tilting her head to one side.

"This is my job," said Wednesday solemnly, peeling a piece of green construction paper away from a piece of red. "I need to take this apart."

Jane was studying curiously as she did not think that it was hers. "Does it not belong to someone else?" she gently remarked. "I think they would be very upset to find their work undone, as you would in a similar situation."

"It's my job," said Wednesday again, for she had been observing him very closely. "He would understand if it was my job. He likes jobs."

"Like the most boring version of Wheel of Fortune, huh?" Asher said, eying the little girl and her materials. The OCD freak who owned it probably wouldn't approve of any modifications she had in mind. A responsible adult might have tried to stop her. "Here to fix that, I take it?"

"I'm doing an important service to the island," said Wednesday, eyeing him for a moment before turning back to her task. "Just like I promised to."

"By defacing someone else's property? Not gonna stop you, just curious." Because if he ever found himself needing to perform 'important services' for the island, it'd be useful to know he could just fuck shit up while keeping a promise.

"If I don't destroy it, the job wheel could enslave us all," said Wednesday, "and I refuse to be enslaved to a wheel."

"Good job," said Samara approvingly. "This needs to happen." She went to get a glass of water, and then she came back to sit down and watch the show with great interest. Sometimes Wednesday was just her favorite person of all.

"I want to be thorough," said Wednesday, cutting up every single piece that she removed. "It might resurrect itself if I don't."

"Klaus says that it was Voldemort who put me in the well," Samara said without segue. "And that he's not really dead. They never found a body. How likely is it?"

"If they didn't find a body, he's probably still out there," said Wednesday. "Nobody's that good at hiding a body. Not even me."

There were many things Atia disliked about this place. The wheel on the wall designating tasks to all and sundry was one. As if she were to clean floors; or worse, bathing chambers. As such, when she saw the girl destroying it she could only smile, encouraged by such a display. "I do wonder why no one has thought of that already. It seems a good thing to be rid of."

"There have been other wheels before this one," said Wednesday ominously. "I want to be sure that this time it won't rise again."

The girl had a way of speaking that made Atia wonder if in another world she would be an oracle or priestess. The skin of her neck prickled, her hand rubbing it absently.

"Put it to fire," she said in the end, "replace it with another wheel of some sort." Much like taking down the votives to one god an putting up ones to another. Fire, she thought, was cleansing.

Wednesday looked at her with a new respect. "I'll burn the pieces as soon as they've been defaced," she said. "I want to be absolutely certain."
