Wednesday didn't believe in anyone else deciding her fate, particularly not someone with a wheel. It was unsettling even just sitting there unmanned in the corner of the room, with all of its bright colours and neat handwriting and clearly delineated tasks. If a person wasn't careful, they could be ruled by the wheel with no means of escape ( Read more... )

There were many things Atia disliked about this place. The wheel on the wall designating tasks to all and sundry was one. As if she were to clean floors; or worse, bathing chambers. As such, when she saw the girl destroying it she could only smile, encouraged by such a display. "I do wonder why no one has thought of that already. It seems a good thing to be rid of."

"There have been other wheels before this one," said Wednesday ominously. "I want to be sure that this time it won't rise again."

The girl had a way of speaking that made Atia wonder if in another world she would be an oracle or priestess. The skin of her neck prickled, her hand rubbing it absently.

"Put it to fire," she said in the end, "replace it with another wheel of some sort." Much like taking down the votives to one god an putting up ones to another. Fire, she thought, was cleansing.

Wednesday looked at her with a new respect. "I'll burn the pieces as soon as they've been defaced," she said. "I want to be absolutely certain."

Atia made a small sound of agreement, arranging herself on a couch with her tea. "The god of household chores. Never a god I'd heard of," Not that she would have known or even cared if her servants and slaves had someone they prayed to, some sort of wheel of tasks of their own. "It's like that thing is an idol to some."

Wednesday nodded solemnly. "And there are much larger and more important things to put your faith in than a job wheel," she said.

"My own abilities to ensure my own safety and success, more than the randomness of some wheel." Though here, it was not quite so. "If you do burn it, you may want to replace it with the wheel of-" Atia paused thoughtfully, "-the wheel of debauchery. People do take themselves too seriously here."

"I'm not debauched yet," Wednesday said, looking up at her. "I'm only a child."

"Hardly a child," Atia looked critically at the girl for a moment, her head tilting from one side to the other. "A young woman more like. In my time you would have likely bedded your first man, or woman if that was what should be more expedient. Possibly even be married."

"We don't live in your time," said Wednesday. There were many things about Roman times that she admired, but that was not one of them. "I'm not ready to marry."

Her annoyance at the girl's retort fades as quickly as it threatened to rise. "No one wished to marry. We did what was required of us."
