Lily was in her office. She was sitting at her desk in the corner of the little, one room clinic in the Hidden Hamlet with the door standing open to let in a breeze. Emmy was sitting in the middle of the floor with Toby the turtle and Princess the bear and she was throwing blocks at the wall ( Read more... )

An appointment with Lily was not so much a date and a time as it was "come in some time this week when you have a moment", which is precisely what Anne was doing.

"Hello?" she said, poking her head in the door then smiling at the little girl. "It looks looks like somebody is preparing for a career in sport."

"She's preparing for a career as an utter miscreant," said Lily, with a bright and welcoming smile, looking up as Anne came through the door.

Lily still hadn't quite gotten over the shock of being Anne Shirley's midwife, but she was nothing if not professional.

"Come in, Anne. Sit down. You're looking well."

"Oh yes, I'm feeling quite well," Anne agreed with her, though she was happy to get off her feet nonetheless. "Though I feel heavier and heavier by the day. The work shearing the sheep was much more tiring than I would have expected."

"Well, that's to be expected," said Lily, raising an eyebrow as Emmy got up to retrieve her blocks. "You're dragging a whole extra person around with you, Anne."

As was Chris's luck (or maybe it just said something about the Strombeck family in general and their feelings toward him), the block collided with Chris's left shin the second he walked into the hut.

Compared to the beating he'd taken a few days ago, it really wasn't anything much, but it still sent a quick jab of pain up his leg and he looked around for the source.

"Christ, Lily," he said, laughing a little once he realized who'd thrown the thing at him, "You training her to be a weapon or something?"

"Well, it wasn't her, Chris," said lily, leaning her chin into the palm of her hand and smiling up at him. "It was definitely the turtle."

She raised an eyebrow.

"How're you doing, honey?"

"Ah," Chris replied, giving a slow nod before leaning down to scoop Emmy up into his arms. The movement was a dumb one as it shot pain straight up his back and down his legs, making him cringe harshly as he held Emmy against his side. "Turtle, eh?" he asked Emmy, his voice colored with pain. "Turtle's a pretty good shot."

He looked over at Lily then and walked toward her. "Been better," he answered with a shrug and then glanced down at the scattering of papers on the desk. "Looks like you're keeping busy."

"I've got a couple of births coming up towards the end of the year," said Lily. "It's nice to feel useful, you know?"

She looked up at him and then nodded towards the chair.

"Sit down. What've you done to yourself now?"

"Man, we just need to channel that energy into curling and you're going to have a grade A take out artist on your hands," Lennox announced cheerfully as he strolled into the little clinic, then swept Emmy up into his arms. A good portion of the cheer was genuine as he loved Emmy and he loved Lily, but a small chunk of it was forced. Felt forced.

He was still trying to resist the urge to track Mike down and beat the hell out of him. "What's up, baby?" he asked, settling into a chair across from Lily.

"She just needs a little bit more upper body strength, and you'll get her curling," said Lily with a firm nod of her head.

Lily tilted her head.

"Are you talking to me or Emmy, Lennox?"

"You, of course," Lennox replied with a grin, bouncing Emmy in his lap as she squirmed and waved her turtle at him impatiently. "Emmy's just gonna tell me lies, Lil, and you know my fragile heart can't handle to hear her beautiful story telling anymore. Not when none of it turns out to be true."

"I'm doing alright," said Lily, twirling her pencil between her fingers. "I've got a few births coming up at the end of the year."

She sighed theatrically.

"And I'm forty, Lennox. I'm forty."

"Hullo?" Tosh knew there was a midwife on the island, and had heard someone in the clinic mention that she worked out of the Hamlet. The block that sailed out of the room hadn't quite been what she'd expected, managing to step out of the way in time. "I hope I'm not bothering anyone?"

"Oh, hi," said Lily, standing up and coming out from behind her desk, wiping her hands on her flowered skirt. "Come on in. Emmy's grouchy, but Emmy's always grouchy."

Tosh amiled wryly at that, "They seem to do that, don't they?" Holding out her hand, her smile warmed, "I'm Tosh and I'm hoping you're Lily?"

"I most definitely am," said Lily, taking Tosh's hand in hers and shaking firmly. "Something I can help you with, honey?"

As time approached, her nerves went there and here, depending on time, or mood or well, her own sense of feeling.

What didn't matter was the fact that she was hot, she was heavy and she felt like she was about to burst, and wanted someone to offer assurance that she wasn't going to just up and die. Or if she was, that it was going to be quick. So with a fair knock, she poked her head inside the door.

"S'everything all right in here?"

Lily looked up, a bright, warm smile spreading across her face when she saw Isolde standing in the doorway.

"Yes, yes," said Lily, motioning for the other woman to come into the clinic proper. "And how're you doing? Feeling okay?"

Obeying the gesture as she was wont to do in times like this, she wandered in, her breathes a bit more laboured than they had been a months prior.

"Been better, I'll be keen to admit, hoping 'm not dying or nothing, all this heat and such. How're ye?" she asked, nodding her head at both woman and little girl.

"Oh, we're fine, honey. Just fine." Lily got up and walked around the desk a look of concern on her face.

"You sit yourself down here, honey, and I'll have a look at you. But, if it helps, I'm pretty sure you look far too healthy to be dying."
