Lily was in her office. She was sitting at her desk in the corner of the little, one room clinic in the Hidden Hamlet with the door standing open to let in a breeze. Emmy was sitting in the middle of the floor with Toby the turtle and Princess the bear and she was throwing blocks at the wall ( Read more... )

"Man, we just need to channel that energy into curling and you're going to have a grade A take out artist on your hands," Lennox announced cheerfully as he strolled into the little clinic, then swept Emmy up into his arms. A good portion of the cheer was genuine as he loved Emmy and he loved Lily, but a small chunk of it was forced. Felt forced.

He was still trying to resist the urge to track Mike down and beat the hell out of him. "What's up, baby?" he asked, settling into a chair across from Lily.

"She just needs a little bit more upper body strength, and you'll get her curling," said Lily with a firm nod of her head.

Lily tilted her head.

"Are you talking to me or Emmy, Lennox?"

"You, of course," Lennox replied with a grin, bouncing Emmy in his lap as she squirmed and waved her turtle at him impatiently. "Emmy's just gonna tell me lies, Lil, and you know my fragile heart can't handle to hear her beautiful story telling anymore. Not when none of it turns out to be true."

"I'm doing alright," said Lily, twirling her pencil between her fingers. "I've got a few births coming up at the end of the year."

She sighed theatrically.

"And I'm forty, Lennox. I'm forty."

"I'm gonna be thirty at my next birthday," Lennox replied simply, his mouth curving up into a small grin. "So what's the problem?" Forty wasn't bad as far as he could tell. Forty was just forty. Another number. No matter what that number was, Lily was still Lily and he was still Lennox.

"Oh, shut up," said Lily, though she was good natured about it. "Maybe I'm going to have to get you dancing on a damn table with me before I start feeling decrepit."

"Baby, any time you're ready, you just have to ask," Lennox reminded her, still smiling as he continued to bounce Emmy. For his troubles, he got smacked in the jaw with her turtle.

"I don't think this table would stand the weight," said Lily, patting the table that Eddie had made with the palm of her head.

"Hey, Emmy. Go gentle with uncle Lennox."

"Then I guess you and me gotta find ourselves another table," Lennox replied with a grin, getting another smack before he grabbed Emmy's little hand to look at her turtle. "Who's this, kiddo?"

"There's bound to be one reinforced enough around here." Lily grinned.

Emmy held up her turtle.

"Tob!"

"Maybe the one in the rec room?" Lennox asked with a grin, watching as Emmy held her turtle up for him to see. At least he wasn't being hit with it anymore. "Or in the kitchen? That's Toby, eh? Does Toby like beating me?"

"I am not dancing on anyone's kitchen table, James Lennox." Lily made a face which Emmy mimicked ably.

"Why not?" he asked, watching Emmy and then petting her head gently. "Mommy should dance on a kitchen table, right, cutie? You just let her know that dancing on a kitchen table is a-okay by you."

"I am far, far too old to be making a spectacle of myself, Lennox. I..."

Lily was interrupted by Emmy, who thrust both hands into the air.

"Dance!"

"See?" Lennox asked, looking smug as he narrowly avoided being hit in the face with the turtle again when Emmy thrust her hands into the air. "Your kid agrees with me."

"I think it's more that she wants to go dancing, Lennox," said Lily. "Eddie's found someone who says she'll give her dance lessons."
