The past few days have been no different for Curtis. Sure, the apartment complex is a bit more crowded than usual, and Newbie keeps trying to invite people to sleep in their suite because it's so big and there are so many homeless people laying around, but overall it's not so bad. Hope says there's a hurricane outside and so Newbie's safety proofed ( Read more... )

Once he'd been kicked out of the lab, Zach decided that a spot in front of the television was better than lying in a bed three levels down for hours with nothing to do but listen to people panic. He was lucky enough to find an unoccupied chair, and after pulling it so he had a good vantage point, sat down without ceremony.

He blinked at the other guy, then looked back at the television. "What movie is this?"

Curtis looks over when he realizes someone is talking to him. He blinks, mentally shaking his head. "Um...Deep Impact starring Robert Duvall and Tea Leoni. It's another one of those movies where a comet from space is going to kill everyone," he explains. His hand twitches for the TV Guide the apartment complex is too cheap to subscribe to.

"Oh, one of those. The scenario's highly improbable." It was a sort of mind numbing thing to watch, and he understood the guy's glazed face a bit more.

"My name's Zach," he said, turning back to the TV. Elijah Wood looked weird when he wasn't in a hobbit wig.

So is America electing a black man as their president, Curtis thinks.

"I'm Curtis," he replies. He looks back to the TV as well. "How is it that a high school student noticed the comet and no one else in NASA or anywhere else did? For an entire year." He gives a snort.

Hope had been wandering around but after awhile she thought she ought to check back on Newbie and on Curtis. She wasn't sure if Curtis really understood about the hurricane since it was outside and she supposed he didn't really need to. They were safe in the compound. She set one of the grey emergency blankets down on his lap and pulled the other one around herself as she sat down next to him.

Curtis blinks and looks down at the blanket, then over at Hope. "Hey, where have you been?" he asks, smiling a little. He isn't cold, but he pulls the blanket around himself anyway.

"Seeing how other people were doing and how bad the storm was," she said softly, taking his hand. "What are you watching?"

Curtis holds Hope's smaller hand in his. Uh-oh, maybe this is one of those times when she needs emotional support, because of the storm. "Um, it's called Deep Impact and it's about a comet falling to Earth to cause mass chaos and destruction. But don't worry," he adds, patting her hand, "it won't happen to us."

Jim could very much use something mind-numbing to get his mind off the things going on, so when he saw the familiar sight of the flickering television he walked over, sitting down next to Curtis.

"What's the stuff on your TV for?" he asked, eying the weird padding.

Curtis sighs, embarrassed for himself. "Newbie put it there, to protect the TV from falling debris. He seems convinced that the entire complex could crumble in on top of us."

"Oh," he replied, deciding to not mention to multiple flaws in the idea that immediately came to mind. It was the thought that counted. "Well, you hardly notice them. And um, the idea might work, though honestly I doubt the ceiling will collapse on us."

He hoped. The thought hadn't come to him, actually though, as he warily stared up at the ceiling, he wondered if it could happen. He brushed the thought away immediately, returning his attention to the TV.

"What's this? Deep Impact?"

Jim hadn't seen the movie in a while, but it looked familiar.

"I think he's working on a raft for it now, in case the apartment complex floods," Curtis admits, rubbing his head a little.

He looks back up at the TV. "Yeah. It's just about the only thing on right now."

Cooped up indoors, with no hope of leaving again for at least a day, if not more (and given the stunt he'd pulled, Geoffrey wouldn't have been surprised if Duck had tried to keep him indoors until the sky was sunny again), Geoffrey needed to do something before he went crazy. So putting his still-damp books away, he got out Duck's old jeans and the supplies he'd gathered and started trying to put together a pair of overalls.

In any universe, there was no better place to do that than sitting in front of the television. Even if it did mean sharing space with that guy who looked creepily like Darren Nichols.

Curtis glances over as Geoffrey sits down next to him. Some people had such audacity. He watches TV, continuing to glance over every now and then, trying to figure out what Geoffrey's doing. "Are you making yourself pants?" he finally asks.

"No, I'm making someone else pants," he said without looking up. Seriously, it was a real bitch trying to meet that guy's eyes without smirking or something. "Or, well, overalls, since the pants part was taken care of for me in some factory in China." The bone needle was proving a bit trickier than he might've thought.

Curtis watches Geoffrey work. It takes some time for the thought to pop into his head, but when it does he can't help asking, "Is this something you do often? I mean," he makes a vague hand motion, "as a job, or a hobby?"

Newbie flops down onto the couch next to him, pleased to find his head landing neatly in Curtis' lap. He hadn't even been aiming!

His pleasure quickly fades to disapproval, however, when he sees what Curtis is watching. "Natural disasters do not a happy homeless mob make," he reminds him.

Curtis' hand falls automatically to Newbie's soft spikey hair and he runs his fingers through it. "There's nothing else on," he complains, still staring at the TV.

Newbie's admonitions against Curtis' choice of movie are quickly stifled by the hand in his hair, and he squirms into it, pushing his hair through Curtis' fingers. "Are you scared?" he asks, already on another subject.

Curtis' eyebrows raise and he looks down at Newbie. "Scared? Of what?" he asks, petting Newbie's head as if he was Lucky.
