The past few days have been no different for Curtis. Sure, the apartment complex is a bit more crowded than usual, and Newbie keeps trying to invite people to sleep in their suite because it's so big and there are so many homeless people laying around, but overall it's not so bad. Hope says there's a hurricane outside and so Newbie's safety proofed ( Read more... )

Hope had been wandering around but after awhile she thought she ought to check back on Newbie and on Curtis. She wasn't sure if Curtis really understood about the hurricane since it was outside and she supposed he didn't really need to. They were safe in the compound. She set one of the grey emergency blankets down on his lap and pulled the other one around herself as she sat down next to him.

Curtis blinks and looks down at the blanket, then over at Hope. "Hey, where have you been?" he asks, smiling a little. He isn't cold, but he pulls the blanket around himself anyway.

"Seeing how other people were doing and how bad the storm was," she said softly, taking his hand. "What are you watching?"

Curtis holds Hope's smaller hand in his. Uh-oh, maybe this is one of those times when she needs emotional support, because of the storm. "Um, it's called Deep Impact and it's about a comet falling to Earth to cause mass chaos and destruction. But don't worry," he adds, patting her hand, "it won't happen to us."

"....ah," Hope managed. She glanced around at the other people in various corners or parts of the room and then quietly added: "Curtis, is there anything more pleasant on? Curling, maybe?"

Curtis sighs. "If there was anything better on, don't you think I would be watching it already?" He flips channels anyway, and settles on a show about gardening for Hope. "How about this?"

"This is better," she decided after a few moments. It wasn't very entertaining but it was better than a movie about chaos and destruction.

Hope kissed his cheek and then listened as an older woman offered advice on making eggplants grow. She'd never realized there were so many different types of eggplants before.

Curtis kisses Hope's cheek in return and pulls her close to his side, keeping an arm around her. He watches the show, a small frown on his face. "Eggplant always sort of tasted like pasta to me," he comments.

"It's sort of stringy on its own and I think Japanese eggplants taste different," she said thoughtfully. It was a ridiculous thing to talk about but that was all right. The island was sort of a ridiculous place.

"I think I'll just stick with normal food." Japanese eggplant does not sound appetizing to him in the least. "Hope food."

She laughed and then wondered if he meant that she was normal or that he liked her cooking. "Hope food?"

"Food made by Hope," he explains. "Especially the tuna casserole..."

"You're so cute sometimes," she said happily. "It might be hard to make a tuna casserole here though, Curtis."

Curtis smiles at the compliment and kisses her neck. "If there's an ocean, shouldn't there be tuna?"

"If you go fishing for tuna, I'll make you plenty of tuna casserole."

Curtis looks disgruntled. "Maybe Newbie will go fishing for tuna? It sounds like something that would interest him."
