HIDE THE WINCEST GUYS

May 30, 2007 11:17

For those of you wondering what's going on with the "banned livejournals" thing, you can read about it here.

Or I can summarize: livejournal has been banning accounts (fanfiction communities, RP journals) for promoting illegal activity, like incest and pedophilia. There's some talk of it being at the behest of Warriors for Innoncence, but they ( Read more... )

incest, adventures in interweb, now i have an incest tag

I guess I belong to one of the eternally-lost folks out there, lol. Though the word "pedophile" caught me attention for a bit back then, heh. /is shot

This is almost like philosophy of law. Interesting. I'm actually leaning towards the control mania perspective since hell, a lot of people should learn by now that internet = you can't see the face of others != anything can be said without a clear conscience.

Nevertheless, controversial topics like incest/pedophilia topics will always remain active somewhere no matter what LiveJournal does. It'd be a lot of work banning them without a clear result in sight. Can LJ staff alone really pull it all out? Things continue to remain in the dark~

Sometimes it's hard to know and care o_O

LJ does have the right to control what we say on its server. It's like being banned from a message board.

The problem is that LJ is not coming up and saying "we can ban you for whatever we want." They're hiding behind legal arguments that don't even apply (according to the TOS, LJ is bound by United States law, and under U.S. law you can write all the incest and kiddy erotica you want as long as no real illegal incest or real children are involved-- something that isn't true in many other English-speaking countries, including Canada and Australia). Nobody did a thing illegal on LJ except for the tiny number (especially when compared to the number of people caught in the crossfire) real pedophiles, and they need to quit saying that those people did.

I'd have a lot more respect for them if they came out and said "we make more money from advertising than we do from paid accounts, and so we buckle to advertiser pressure even on issues where our account holders have the higher legal ground." I wouldn't like it, but I'd prefer honesty to ( ... )

I wouldn't like it, but I'd prefer honesty to their lying about illegal activity.

I guess I thought that sort of went without saying. Livejournal is a business, not a utopia, and I'm not sure if fandom always understands that. Granted, I guess LJ itself tries to hide that fact. I'm with you in wishing they'd be more honest about that.

Oh, I realize that; I was saying it back in the sponsored community debacle. I find it disconcerting, though, that they said back then that they would not be allowing sponsors to pressure them into deleting content-- well, that promise has already been broken. As you said, they've been trying to hide the fact that they are in it for the money and still come across as the hip, open-source place they were before 2005. They need to just come out and say that the old LiveJournal is dead.

Of course, the main difference between the argument against advertiser pressure then was (hilariously enough) that the advertisers in the copyright infringement actually could legally force LJ's hand but LJ was still assuring us they wouldn't take it; for users in the United States, at least, they could not in this particular situation but LJ folded almost immediately.

I do have to say, though, I've been reading news and the next time a Canadian or Australian says "BUT WHY AM I SUBJECT TO U.S. LAW?" I'm going to hold off on the "you agreed to it with the ( ... )

Yeah, but it's definitely a question of "how corperate LJ has become" rather than "OMG FIRST AMMENDMENT FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!1" Livejournal can't take away your freedom of speech. They can just bar you from their forum, which they have every right to do. Which doesn't mean they're right to do it.

On the topic of WHY AM I SUBJECT TO US LAW?!, people need to stop protesting LJ by moving to Vox. *grumble*

Ugh. I'm still so frustrated by the whole thing, to be perfectly honest. :\ I mean, it doesn't seem legal for them to do what they're doing without any notice to the users or without proper investigation on their part. But I agree that I'm still sorting through everything.

Oh, just a heads up though - apparently that website is giving people crazy amounts of spyware, so you might want to check your comp. *sigh*

P.S. WHY DID YOU NOT APPLY FOR SUIKODEN III FANLISTING? I NEEDS MUST KNOW.

They reserve the right in the TOS. I'm perfectly convinced it's legal, I'm just not sure it's something I'm happy with them doing. (Okay, I know I'm not happy with it, but you get it.) For me it's more symptomatic of LJ being more business-like.

Ah, I'm on a mac, so I think I'm safe.

P.S. It was finals week, I didn't have time, and I also own the Nash, Chris, and Suiko II listings. So, I thought if someone else wanted to apply...they should. But now I might apply for it. Hmmm.

I can't really drum up much interest in it. My entire flist went nuts and pointed me in the direction of irritatingly self righteous entries and yeah, I don't like incest or pedophilia even in fandom so my sympathy is limited. Although this WFI crowd just seem like a bunch of overzealous vigilantes, and I can see where people are coming from, too, but then again, LJ can delete who they want for these reasons, isn't it in the TOS? And, like you said, it's their server.

Uh, yeah, I know my opinion is differing from the rest of my flist, but whatever. I'm afraid if I made an entry saying the above, a whole bunch of people would jump down my throat and I just can't bring myself to care enough about it. Not when KAIN IS IN 3D AND BEING AWESOME BY SIMPLY SKULKING IN THE SHADOWS. Haha, it's funny how I was all unsure of this remake, and all they had to do was show Kain and I change my tune pretty quickly. ♥

GOOD. I AWAIT THE FRUITION OF THESE PLANS. I require password, or else I will make up one that will involve the smushing of Isshin and Ryuuken's names together in that OMG!OTP kind of way.

(or, er, maybe not, seeing as how I've announced it in your livejournal)
