HIDE THE WINCEST GUYS

For those of you wondering what's going on with the "banned livejournals" thing, you can read about it here.

Or I can summarize: livejournal has been banning accounts (fanfiction communities, RP journals) for promoting illegal activity, like incest and pedophilia. There's some talk of it being at the behest of Warriors for Innoncence, but they ( Read more... )

Oh, I realize that; I was saying it back in the sponsored community debacle. I find it disconcerting, though, that they said back then that they would not be allowing sponsors to pressure them into deleting content-- well, that promise has already been broken. As you said, they've been trying to hide the fact that they are in it for the money and still come across as the hip, open-source place they were before 2005. They need to just come out and say that the old LiveJournal is dead.

Of course, the main difference between the argument against advertiser pressure then was (hilariously enough) that the advertisers in the copyright infringement actually could legally force LJ's hand but LJ was still assuring us they wouldn't take it; for users in the United States, at least, they could not in this particular situation but LJ folded almost immediately.

I do have to say, though, I've been reading news and the next time a Canadian or Australian says "BUT WHY AM I SUBJECT TO U.S. LAW?" I'm going to hold off on the "you agreed to it with the TOS" and instead tell them they're damn lucky they are in this case, because in this area U.S. law is way more lenient-- it LJ was holding them to their native laws, they would be in jail for child porn for something that's legal in the United States.

Yeah, but it's definitely a question of "how corperate LJ has become" rather than "OMG FIRST AMMENDMENT FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!1" Livejournal can't take away your freedom of speech. They can just bar you from their forum, which they have every right to do. Which doesn't mean they're right to do it.

On the topic of WHY AM I SUBJECT TO US LAW?!, people need to stop protesting LJ by moving to Vox. *grumble*
