Research project: books with interesting portrayals of hard AI and/or interesting first contact
I'm looking for a few recommendations to give of interesting AI/first contact books. Extra points for non-white-male authors.
The first one that comes to mind for me is The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. But there are people far more qualified than I am who might read this. (or who people who read this might be able to ask :) -
Review: Sweeney Todd
I am behind in my movie watching, but I just watched the new Sweeney Todd movie. It is astonishingly dark. I thought is was an interesting hybrid between movie and comic book and theatre piece with a beautiful detailed sense of place, that's hard to get in the theatre. Retroactive review: August Osage County
While in New York, we went to see August: Osage County by Tracy Letts, which I had been wanting to see for a while.
I was divided. It was very good, and very well acted, but there were some odd emotional moments and Letts is kind of harsh on his women.

Blue Angels
The Blue Angels are here practicing for shows this weekend. They're lovely to watch. It's like dancing, only in 3D. And much, much louder. The synchronized rolls are breathtaking. And when you're flying, you don't get five points of contact. At least not on a good day. -

Glaciers
Today there were mule deer, wolves, mating grouse, two black bears, one large and one small, mountain goats, and invisible big horn sheep. There were also uncountable numbers of cattle, many horses, a slowly fading culture, and a quickly fading state of water.
