I skipped riding yesterday, and today I took a daylight ride. I'm on call the next 2 weeks, so I need to be reachable and able to get on-line. During the day there's other people available, but I need to be at home at night.

Tonight I rode out to Herndon. I wasn't sure how far I was going to go when I set out, but I'd finally had a good night's morning's sleep (past noon). At Hunter Mill Rd (12mi/19km) I knew Old Reston Ave (15mi/24km) was easy. When I got to Sunset Hills Rd, I decided to take it instead of the trail. The pavement is better ( Read more... )

I went for a ride before work - just down George Mason Drive and the Bluemont Junction trail to pick up the W&OD out to Falls Church, and then back home. The trails were not crowded, but there were people out. My thermometer was up to 84°F/28.9°C when I got home.

I don't like some of the hills between my house and the W&OD Trail. So today was exploring some alternative routes.

Heading south on George Mason Drive - which ceases to exist for a couple of blocks, and becomes a stream-valley park with a trail, cutting through some ugly-steep hills - seems to be the key component. After ( Read more... )

I tried my first Covid night jaunt. I was working (from home) until 23:00, and it was 23:45 when I left. I did the same ride as Sunday, out the W&OD trail to Hunter Mill Rd (a few miles beyond Vienna) and back. It was about 50°F/10°C, fine with a jacket and long tights. It was still a bit windy. I didn't take any photos in March. After the first week we were working from home, so I wasn't going anyplace, and most days I didn't even get outside. So there wasn't anything saying "Take my picture!"
