bike rides

I squeezed in a ride Tuesday afternoon, the simple ride out the W&OD trail to Hunter Mill Rd and back. 22.96mi (36.95km).

Wednesday 20:00

This afternoon I did the simple ride again, but went out farther, turning around in Reston for a 30.11mi (48.46km) ride. The W&OD has been less crowded this week than my daytime rides last week. Maybe it's been closer to dinner time?

Thursday 03:58

I went for a 2nd ride tonight, 12.30mi (19.795km). I had planned to go farther but it sort-of rained. I took Glebe Rd to Chain Bridge, but it started to rain at the far end of the bridge. There was no rain in the forecast. I had planned to take Canal Rd in to Fletcher's Cove and then take the Capital Crescent Trail out into Maryland, and turn around at 10 miles. But I wasn't up for a rain ride. I turned around and walked up 41st St on the Virginia side. When I got back to Glebe, it wasn't raining. The rain might have been just in the river-gorge microclimate. But my original plan would have had me riding in that for several miles, to the CCT and doubling back on the CCT.

I wasn't ready to pack it in and go back home, so I decided to do something like last Thursday's meander, down Glebe and west on Arlington Blvd (US 50), but just over to George Mason Dr and back home that way. The disjointed ride to Chain Bridge and back was about 4.5mi (7.24km).

Friday 21:00

I replaced the front shifter cable today. It has been fraying near the shift lever, and it wasn't going to last much longer. (I think I actually heard a strand break earlier in the week.)

Today's ride (23.25mi/37.42km) was the simple ride again, out the W&OD and a couple of miles past Vienna. I passed a young woman who asked about my bike. She guessed about the brand and got it wrong, but not that many people know any recumbent brands. It turns out she works at the local recumbent shop, bikes@vienna, where I bought this bike (and a couple more). I'm guessing she's new, because GreenSpeed (her guess) makes only trikes, not bikes. And because I haven't seen her on my previous visits to the shop. She was probably commuting home. The shop is a couple of blocks from the W&OD, and the trail (if it's not packed the way it's been lately) is convenient for test rides.

I took a slightly different route home. Instead of leaving the trail in Falls Church (picking up my old commute route home from Noblis (pka Mitretek)), I went farther, past the construction and W&OD Trail Detour for a new trail bridge over Lee Hwy (US 29), and turning north on Sycamore St to Williamsburg Blvd.
Looking at the I-66 Eastbound Widening Project, some of the detour is going to become the access between Lee Hwy and the trail. My regular route takes me under other I-66 construction on Westmoreland St.

There's been a lot of rain this month. There's been a lot of days I haven't been able to ride, between work, weather, and sleep. [This entry was originally posted as https://syntonic-comma.dreamwidth.org/1141154.html on Dreamwidth (where there are
