Alistair for certain, with all my characters. He's a great tank, and does a good amount of damage ( ... )

Alistair and Wynne seem to make it into most of my parties, Alistair as a tank, Wynne as Heals and Crowd Control. My 3rd slot is actually pretty flexible, though Shale and Ohgren seemed to show up there the most in my Dwarf Commoner playthrough. Leilana occupied it through a good portion of my Human Noble playthrough, but I have been having fun with Zevran lately, and I think my next dedicated playthrough, I'll have him and Morrigan in my party, maybe even try Shale or Sten as the tank (though it's hard to keep Al benched, of course).

My main PC is an elf-Mage Arcane Warrior (big time AOE caster). My back up party ALWAYS has Alistair - seriously, I think I've only left camp without him once, and it was sad :-( But the other two get switched out as need be. If I need SERIOUS tanking, I'll actually bring both Sten and Shale. If there are locks to pick, or things that need stealing? Then Leliana gets one of those slots. If I think some stealthy-ness is needed, then Zev gets to come instead. If I know that healing or mind-control/paralyzing is going to be useful, then I will bring either Wynne or Morrigan with me (but never both, cause three mages in the party would be INSANE ( ... )

I left camp without Alistair once and died a horrible death. I took it as a sign. :P

*nods* I left him behind so I could go preform a blood-ritual and murder the closest thing to a mother he probably ever had. He yelled at me a lot when I got back, so I never left him behind again :-)

I found that I had a lot more latitude with who I could bring along with my mage than with the warrior I'm playing now. Because I specced my mage Spirit Healer/Blood Mage, I found I didn't NEED Morrigan's crowd control or Wynne's healing, and could safely leave them behind in favor of other characters if the desire struck me. I almost always brought Wynne anyway because I totally adore her, but it was still nice to have a little latitude ( ... )
