Well, I recently learned that you miss out on a lot of Sten's dialogue if you don't haul him everywhere, so I started a new Sten-centric game. I respecced him out of two-handers into dual wielding axes (exactly as awesome as it sounds). Having two NPC slots locked down (Alistair is the other guy I always take) can make the game a big pain when the plot forces you to take someone along, mostly because I usually drop the rogue which necessitates a second run through the area to loot. Philosophy with Sten makes it worth the hassle though.

Normally I have Alistair as tank, myself as healer, and rotate the DPS slots according to humor or plot necessity.

Warrior: Wynne, Leliana, either Alistair, Shale, or Oghren depending on the fight. Lots of fights (at least on easy) you simply don't need a dedicated tank.

Rogue: Wynne, Zevran or Morrigan depending on if my rogue is an archer, Alistair-or-Shale.

Mage: Alistair-or-Shale, Leliana-or-Wynne (depends if my mage is a healer), Sten, Oghren-or-Zevran.

I wanna use the dog more, but often can't. XD

I always try to have two mages in my party, healing and dps, which is either Wynne and Morrigan, or one of them plus the PC, depending on the PC spec. I found a PC can opener works better than Leliana or Zev, even though Leliana is very good. Then either Sten or Alistair for tanking. I don't like using Shale too much, because while powerful, her attacks are very specialised.

So my favourite party is rogue!PC, Alistair, Wynne and Morrigan, although I know all their banter by heart now and sometimes take somebody else along just for variety and/or plot reasons.

I tend to mix it up and bring party members based on quests rather than battle, since I'm a sucker for the RPG-part of the game. Also, I don't like playing mages much.

Most used:

Alistair - I quickly spec his shield skills and then throw in either templar or champion powers, which makes him kick ass. He's the last man standing in any difficult battle, I don't know why. Last Archdemon fight he was the only one alive for most of the battle and pretty much ended the Blight by himself. I just know how to use him, I suppose. (My bf has more problems with him and likes Shale, who dies instantly for me ( ... )

Yeah I have an easier time with Shale too, even though I usually use Alistair anyway. Can you give more details on how you spec & stat Alistair?

I spend a lot of his points on dexterity, for one thing. Strength is good, but since he's a shield-and-sword guy he requires high dexterity and those passive shield skills. Just make him strong enough to wear the armour and weapons you want him to wear (I always give him the blood dragon armour and the best sword I can find) and spend the rest on dexterity. I give him a few points to raise mana as well.

Holy smite is a fairly good power to have, for him. As are many of the champion-specific ones so he's usually a templar-champion in my games.

What about Con? Am I fool to dump most of his points there?
