I tend to mix it up and bring party members based on quests rather than battle, since I'm a sucker for the RPG-part of the game. Also, I don't like playing mages much.

Most used:

Alistair - I quickly spec his shield skills and then throw in either templar or champion powers, which makes him kick ass. He's the last man standing in any difficult battle, I don't know why. Last Archdemon fight he was the only one alive for most of the battle and pretty much ended the Blight by himself. I just know how to use him, I suppose. (My bf has more problems with him and likes Shale, who dies instantly for me.)

Wynne/Morrigan - Wynne for healing mainly, but also things that speed up/empower Alistair and the PC on the front line. She holds her own in any fight. Morrigan is more useful if you can make an awful lot of health potions. I like her powers better than Wynnes but sometimes she's just impossible to bring for plot reasons, I can't stand her whining.

Zevran gets a lot of play time, too, even if I play rouge most of the time. I like the challenge of not having a very heavy troup of warriors. He's a favourite to bring because he tends to still surprise me with his approval/disapproval and various comments.

Least used is probably Leliana even though I know how to spec her into a good fighter and should use an archer at times.

Yeah I have an easier time with Shale too, even though I usually use Alistair anyway. Can you give more details on how you spec & stat Alistair?

I spend a lot of his points on dexterity, for one thing. Strength is good, but since he's a shield-and-sword guy he requires high dexterity and those passive shield skills. Just make him strong enough to wear the armour and weapons you want him to wear (I always give him the blood dragon armour and the best sword I can find) and spend the rest on dexterity. I give him a few points to raise mana as well.

Holy smite is a fairly good power to have, for him. As are many of the champion-specific ones so he's usually a templar-champion in my games.

What about Con? Am I fool to dump most of his points there?

I never spend a lot on his con, I find that it doesn't make much of a difference the way I use him. Build his strenght at first so he can use the shiny armour of choice, then pump up his dext (it's required for the higher shield slots) and spend the occasional point on con. That would be my advice.

A normal level-up for me is 1 point for strenght OR con and 2 for dexterity.

He doesn't really need con, especially if you have high approval with him...and his high dex + shield talents will keep him from getting hit.

I tend to favor dex with Alistair with enough strength to wear high end armors.

Yeah, I forgot about the high approval thing. With that, con is definitely not something you need to spend points on.
