Notices had been posted at the beginning of the month and again last weekend. They had setup that morning so that by noon, everything was ready and there was time for everyone to enjoy the buffet Socks had catered in for the volunteers. Caradoc had set perimeter wards and obscuring charms on the outside areas to keep everything secure and under wraps until the Fete began at 2 o'clock ( ... )

Roger squeezed Hermione's hand as they arrived at the community centre. Truthfully, it was on the same side of town as them, but north of the river, and it would have been a nice walk. But the air was getting a bit of bite to it, now, and he didn't want Hermione to catch a chill. For now, he felt fine his white T-shirt and denim overshirt, but the summer was definitely over ( ... )

It was nice to have a Saturday off. Hermione couldn't remember the last one she'd had, probably her birthday weekend more than a month ago. She had managed to hire someone for Vanateigh, though, and she no longer had to divide her time between so many areas. She'd be glad when Quidditch finished, so Ron would be back full-time, but she still expected him to leave the press soon since his heart just wasn't in it.

Today wasn't for thoughts of work, though. It was the Halloween fete in town, and, for once, she didn't even mind that there'd be a crowd. She just wanted to spend time with Roger and try to get into a habit of working more normal hours. Now that she could actually cut her schedule back, she'd have to make sure that Roger wasn't working too hard.

"I've missed it, too," she said, smiling up at Roger before she glanced around the room to make sure it was safe. It had been nearly a year since Voldemort died, but she still had that same cautionary reflex.

He caught her look around the room and took her hand. She was still cautious, he knew, still wary of her surroundings. But he knew she felt safe with him. She let him know it every day. Quickly, he leaned down and brushed a kiss against her temple. "Love you," he whispered before he straightened.

"I'm now wondering which game I can convince you to play," he said, smiling sneakily.

"You, too," she murmured, squeezing his hand as she smiled up at him.

She rolled her eyes when he mentioned games and flashed a sneaky smile. "I don't like playing games. You, however, can play whatever you'd like, and I'll simply take the prize if it's something I want," she said in a bossy tone as she bumped her hip against his.

"Seriously, maybe we should walk around and see what they've got. It looks like there's a lot set up."

The village Halloween festival was going to be great fun, Arabella was sure. She'd volunteered to work at the pumpkin carving booth, as that was something she had always enjoyed and she thought it might be fun to show the children some non-magical ways of carving pumpkins. If anyone offered to help things along magically, she would accept their assistance gladly, but part of the fun of pumpkin carving was digging out the insides and getting your arms full of pumpkin guts. She couldn't help grinning, thinking of all the pumpkin pies she could bake using the innards of the pumpkins that would be carved today.

Su was excited for her first English Halloween in far too long. There were many activities at the community centre, but the first thing that caught Su's eye was the pumpkin carving. She made her way over and smiled at the older woman working there. "I know this is meant for kids, but are adults allowed to play, too? I haven't carved pumpkins in years."

"Of course you can play too. I'm Arabella Figg, by the way," she said, smiling brightly at the young woman. Bending over behind the table at the front of the booth, she pulled up a medium-sized pumpkin. "Do you need any carving tools, or had you planned to do it with magic?"

"Wonderful!" Su grinned. "I'm Su Li, it's nice to meet you. And I think I'd prefer carving tools, if you don't mind. More fun if I can get my hands messy, you know?"

The area behind the community centre was open; green and dotted with trees. If it hadn't been - if there'd been nowhere natural for them to graze, Wilhelmina would never have agreed to this.

But the children she'd seen so far had been full of wonder and innocence, and she had, of course, picked the three most outgoing of her unicorns. It was a good opportunity to teach children respect for the creatures. She wouldn't tolerate them running around, or screaming, or pulling the creatures' manes. The unicorns trusted her, so they were calm, and they moved through the trees like glittering myths until she called them.

Halloween wasn't all about scares and sweets. It was about earth, spirit, wonder. Merlin. When she was a girl, she would have given anything to have been able to ride a unicorn.

"Oh, wow." Amelia said softly, her eyes wide.

"Wow!" Wally chimed in using what surely would have been a loud voice had his sister not clamped her hand over his mouth and admonished him not to scare them.

Rabastan was pleased she had kept him from yelling. He was ready to 'wow' a little himself. It had been a very long time since he had been near unicorns. He was not even sure if he could go near them any more. Ollivander had seemed to think he retained his affinity for animals and his own familiars certainly supported that, but unicorns were trickier even than the phoenix he was still able to call. He squatted down to the children's level. "Amelia is right, Wally. You'll need to be very respectful, listen to Madam Grubbly-Plank, and do exactly what she tells you ( ... )

Wilhelmina noticed Rabastan Lestrange and the two children before they approached. She was grateful to the man for standing back. Whatever his loyalties now - she couldn't forget what Pomona had suffered at the hands of his kind, but she also couldn't dislike someone who was courteous and loved by his pet Kneazle - she didn't think the unicorns would be comfortable around him.

"Hello, you two," she smiled as the children approached. "Amelia, isn't it? And..." she racked her brain to remember the name of the boy, but couldn't. "I'm sorry, what's your name?

"Do you want to ride the unicorns?"

"I am Wally Carter, ma'am. Pleased to meet you." He bowed as taught.

"Not meet, Wally. Pleased to see you. Remember?" Amelia whispered before saying, "Hello, ma'am. Uncle Rab said he didn't want to scare away the unicorns. He's silly. The unicorns can't tell he can turn himself into a wolf can they?"

"I love when Unca Rab makes his wolf, but Mummy thinks it's scary. Maybe unicorns do too."

When the lady asked if they wanted to ride, both kids eyes went even wider and they nodded. Amelia replied first, "Yes, please, ma'am."

"Me too, please. I don't know how to turn into a wolf, but someday I want to turn into a dragon. Do you think I will scare them?"

Orla saw a few people she knew at the small children's fair going on, and waved, but mostly meandered through herself. She marvelled at what all had been thought up, though she was most taken with the unicorns in the edge of the trees. She watched for a few minutes, caught up in the wonder of it all, that she lived in a place where it was real. Sometimes the reality of magic just overwhelmed her, and she was so grateful for it in her life she couldn't properly express it in words.

She saw the strength testing game and had to laugh. The mallet looked heavier than she was. She was content to just wander and look, though maybe later she'd get a pumpkin carved.
