The village Halloween festival was going to be great fun, Arabella was sure. She'd volunteered to work at the pumpkin carving booth, as that was something she had always enjoyed and she thought it might be fun to show the children some non-magical ways of carving pumpkins. If anyone offered to help things along magically, she would accept their assistance gladly, but part of the fun of pumpkin carving was digging out the insides and getting your arms full of pumpkin guts. She couldn't help grinning, thinking of all the pumpkin pies she could bake using the innards of the pumpkins that would be carved today.

Su was excited for her first English Halloween in far too long. There were many activities at the community centre, but the first thing that caught Su's eye was the pumpkin carving. She made her way over and smiled at the older woman working there. "I know this is meant for kids, but are adults allowed to play, too? I haven't carved pumpkins in years."

"Of course you can play too. I'm Arabella Figg, by the way," she said, smiling brightly at the young woman. Bending over behind the table at the front of the booth, she pulled up a medium-sized pumpkin. "Do you need any carving tools, or had you planned to do it with magic?"

"Wonderful!" Su grinned. "I'm Su Li, it's nice to meet you. And I think I'd prefer carving tools, if you don't mind. More fun if I can get my hands messy, you know?"

"It's very nice to meet you too. I know just what you mean about pumpkins and messy hands," Arabella replied.

Fishing in a tub of supplies, she found a set of carving tools, tiny saws and such designed to cut through a pumpkin's shell, as well as paper patterns to create a variety of designs, not all of them scary. "Here you go, tools and patterns if you wish. Or perhaps you'd rather carve a design freehand? At any rate I'll be anxious to see what you come up with."

Su laughed. "It's just not the same experience if your fingernails aren't orange for a full week afterwards."

Grabbing a marker from the table, Su began sketching a comical face on her pumpkin. "Definitely freehand," she commented. After gutting her pumpkin and trying not to leave seeds in her hair as she pushed it out of her face, Su set to work carving. The result wasn't quite what she'd envisioned, but Su decided a cross-eyed pumpkin was charming. Pumpkin under her arm and grinning ear to ear, Su set off to explore the rest of the fete.

Rabastan collected the children at the end of the costume parade. They had been adorable in their Dorothy and Scarecrow outfits their mother had fashioned for them.

"Can we do pumkims next, Unca Rab?" Wally asked.

"Did your mother not take you to carve pumpkins last weekend, Wally?" Rabastan asked the little boy. When he mentioned to Mrs. Carter the Longbottom carving contest and she had said she saw a notice on the way to the market and promised the children a visit ( ... )
