new year's parties in the 1800's

I recently ran across this article from the Wisconsin Historical Society.
It includes the menu from a New Year's party in Milwaukee in 1843, and a brief discussion of the custom of young men spending their New Year's eve calling on available women.

The menu from the 1843 party listed "venison alamode", so that led me on a websearch romp.  In this ( Read more... )

...I would probably eat deer topped with ice cream. But then, I'm very odd.

I've eaten barbecued pork topped with whipped cream, so I'd probably try deer-with-ice-cream too. Once, anyway.
