1. Victorian and steampunk are the same thing people. Something can never be "too Victorian" or like wise something can never be "more Victorian than steampunk". Steampunk is just the sci-fi of the Victorian Era, the Edwardian Era, the French Second Empire, the American Civil War, Reconstruction, the Gilded Age,The Wild west, the Progressive Era, ( Read more... )

I would probably modify the post to say that Victorian is a subset of Steampunk, but Steampunk *can* be other than Victorian.

But it's a personal thing, it seems. YMMV and all that. :)

Yeah I don't think Steampunk = Victorian quite holds true, but I get what the OP is trying to say.

It's the time frame. There are also cultural differences between America's Civil War period, Reconstruction, the Wild West, the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era (both with one another and in reference to the Victorian and Edwardian eras), but they all encompass the same period of time (early-mid 19th century through the early 20th century, ending roughly around WWI). The point was that all of these are examples of the time period that inspires steampunk fiction.

I have issues with absolute statements being made about a creative art and fashion movement. I attempt to cushion my ocassional critcal remarks with the caveat that said criticisms are only my opinion. And as such, are just as valid as the opinions in your statements.

imho.

I think what the OP is trying to say is that yes, YMMV, and yes, you have an incredibly high amount of flexibility.

And that people who are overly or highly critical are just being ridiculous, and creativity is in fact the reason why people are here, other than of course having a good time.

So go for it! Just remember we're all here for a reason, and it's not to criticize or argue.
