1. Victorian and steampunk are the same thing people. Something can never be "too Victorian" or like wise something can never be "more Victorian than steampunk". Steampunk is just the sci-fi of the Victorian Era, the Edwardian Era, the French Second Empire, the American Civil War, Reconstruction, the Gilded Age,The Wild west, the Progressive Era, the Japanese Meiji period, etc. So stop saying that something is "more Victorian than steampunk". That's a complete oxymoron.
2. Stop posting "I know this is not steampunk but..." If you feel it's not steampunk, why are you posting it? Obviously you feel it's steampunk, or else you wouldn't be putting it up here. Clearly you think that it is steampunk but you're afraid that other people will disagree, so you're giving it a disclaimer. Show some balls people. If you're posting here then you feel that it fits. Don't put a flag on it that says "I'm not sure if this qualifies" or else you'll have people taking advantage of that. The worst that happens is that someone disagrees with your take on it. Then you can either have a conversation about it or just ignore them.
3. Do not feel that you need to do an airship pirate look, a ragamuffin look, or wear goggles. I have gotten a few emails from people saying they don't want to do any of that but they're afraid they won't fit it. The airship pirate and all the other cliches that run around it are the most overdone look in this trend. If you don't want to do it, then don't do it. You'll look more unique and get to show off your own individual style. Don't feel that you have to do what everyone else is doing just to fit in. There is a vast realm of history and literature to draw upon when crafting your own look. You don't have to copy other people. Also, you don't have to have a persona. You can if you want to, but you don't have to. A lot of people feel it's required of them, and I don't know where that idea came from. You don't need one to dress up and have fun. Just like if you wish to have a persona then more power to you but you do not "Need" to have one to jump in the fun.
4. These are still the best darn guides for how to dress, if you need them.
http://community.livejournal.com/steamfashion/929255.html Its fashion and the big point of fashion is to look good and have fun and as long as you think you look good and are in fact having fun with it then your ok.
