James Lester had his life planned. He would take a first in Greats and enter politics.
His father’s death changed everything. James came down from university to a mass of debts, a broken engagement and social ruin. He paid the first, mourned the second, and surmounted the third.
Life was work.
Then the Fates gave him not one but two orphans to resentfully protect. More duties, he thought. The girl was small and fair. She stroked his horse’s nose. The boy was scruffy, dark-haired and dark-eyed. He clutched a ring to his lips.
They became James’s family.
He regretted nothing.
