Hello, everyone! Jeffy and I were kind of talking… Oh! Jeffy is my stuffed teddy bear!

[Sae exclaims as she realizes many people won’t know who Jeffy is. She even sits him up at this time so the camera can get a better look at him. ]

I… well, I guess I was the one doing all of the talking! [Giggle.] But, I was just ( Read more... )

In my world, you could say we have two New Year's celebrations. One is according to the calendar used most commonly, and one is according to the lunar calendar that was traditional in my country for many centuries.

[Hi there, Sae! Ami's happy to touch base.]

Two? Oh! That's right! You are from Japan too, right? Then New Year's should be about the same for us!

[Hello! Sae is thrilled to hear from you again! ]

That's right. We probably have many similar traditions, too, regarding celebrating it.

Mm! [She nods. ]

I don't really know what to do here. I mean there wouldn't be any New Year's programing on TV and there isn't a Shrine around to go and visit... I guess I can still get up early to see the first sunrise, but that is why I was asking what other people like to do.

Usually where I was from, we'd celebrate the New Year by having a big party where people would gather to have fun, eat and count down to the new year.

We usually do something like that too! My friends and I sit around kotatsu and watch the New Year's programing on TV.
I already have plans for the New Year too! I'm going to get up early so I can see the first sunrise over the ocean!

That sounds beautiful, but I don't think I'd be able to do something like that. You must really like the sunrise?

Where I come from the first things of the New Year are pretty important. I like to keep track of things like the first sunrise, the first friend I say hello to, maybe its a little childish now... but I still think it is fun.

Why couldn't you do that? Maybe you sleep too late?

[Ven actually looks a bit frazzled after several days of taking care of two invalids. Two invalids that don't like being invalids.]

Fireworks? Resolutions? What's all that about?

You don't know?

When the year ends we usually throw a party, see fireworks, or watch New Year's shows on TV. The resolutions are things we decide we will try to be better at next year. Like... getting better grades or going on a diet.

Well we didn't really do a lot of holiday stuff where I come from... [He might be from this universe, but he doesn't know a lot of "usual" stuff because of the rather isolationist world he is from.] I haven't really heard of most of these holidays.

Then you should come celebrate with me! We can do all of the New Year's time things, I might be able to make some fireworks if I use magic, and we can eat mochi! It will be fun!

Where I come from the New Year is celebrated when spring starts.

speakstojeffy January 1 2012, 20:13:37 UTC
Really? Maybe you throw confetti around when the first flower blooms?

filchedfruit January 2 2012, 01:38:58 UTC
Confetti seems like it would be a mess. It's more a time for visiting all of your friends and relatives. The yurts have to look nice for that.

I guess that would be messy! I never really thought about it.

Do you have a party when you visit people?

Is the coming of a new year important?

speakstojeffy January 1 2012, 20:15:03 UTC
Oh, yes it is! Very much!

You need to do some things in order to have good luck in the New Year and it is a lot of fun too. You have never celebrated it either?

Why is it important? [ It's just another year, what's so special about that :I ]

Um... no. I don't think so... what do you have to do to have good luck?

Reply

speakstojeffy January 3 2012, 18:20:52 UTC
Well, because a new year gives you the chance to do everything you couldn't do the year before.

I usually go to a shrine and purchase a New Year's goodluck charm, but eating mochi can give you good luck and Ami says if you dream about Mount Fuji that can give you good luck too!
