Who: Duke Fabre and Susanne What: Fabre returns with Luke to break the news. Where: Their house in the neighbourhood~ When: After this log. Rating: G to PG Open: No~
Fabre didn't answer at first, eyes narrowing. Susanne was going to find out sooner or later, and it was probably best to tell her everything so she would not be surprised later on. Still... it was a great deal to take in all at once, and with her usual state of health, it made him cautious.
"You had best sit down, Susanne," he finally murmured, touching his palm to Luke's forehead. No fever - good.
That small sentence told Susanne all she needed to know. Her eyes burned, and she kept them trained on her son, even though his image blurred and shimmered like a desert mirage. Her hands on her lap twisted around each other, and she took a shuddering breath before responding, "I am kneel-ling."
She knew what he was going to say, and half of her screamed for her to run from the room, so she would not have to listen. She knew the news he had for her.
She knew and she hated that she did...because it was one less moment that he was alive in her world.
... So... she knew, now. Without him even saying so... she knew.
He'd often wondered how she did that. She was a much stronger and wiser woman than most thought her to be. More's the pity.
"He was going to kill Luke," he said softly, hand lowering to curve gingerly around his son's, watching for any reaction. The boy was completely unresponsive. "Had I not acted, our son would be dead. For their sake and ours, I..."
He didn't bother to finish. Why speak the words that she had already anticipated? It would only hurt her, in the end.
"...I know," she answered hoarsely, and lowered her gaze to her lap. Tears spilled over and rolled a path down her cheeks, and she sniffed hard, reaching up to rub them away. "I know you would not have if there were no other ch-choice." It didn't help, no matter what she knew and believed.
Guy was dead.
Dearest, sweetest Guy was dead.
...It was as crushing as losing a son, she thought. When she had thought Asch was lost to her (and he actually had been, in a sense), or when she had heard of Akzeriuth's collapse and thought Luke dead...
Susanne lifted her hands to clutch at her sleeves, holding herself. Bending at the waist, she leaned forward to hide her sobs in her knees. Guy was dead.
Fabre had to grit his teeth, hesitating a moment before reaching out and touching Susanne's shoulder, then rubbing her back. he was wary of holding her - his clothes were still so bloody, and worse, it was his fault that she was so upset.
"Susanne..." he murmured, his tone laced very lightly with regret. "I am sorry. If there had been any other way- or if I had known he would attack Luke so easily..."
Asch was right. They shouldn't have gone looking for Guy.
