[ The communicator flicks on and Anders is reclining in the desk chair in front of it, doing his very best to look like he's comfortable in his surroundings. This is hilariously far from the truth, but there's something to be said for making a good show of it anyway. He's apparently not had time to go looking for new clothing, as his is still badly ( Read more... )

There are plenty of people here that have little in the way physical fighting skills, so you shouldn't worry about that too much.

Ah, I am Flynn Scifo, second command of the guest run Watch. If you find you need anything while you're here please don't hesitate to say so.

[ ---Maker, this kid can't be a day over 20, if that. The "Watch" must be a welcoming committee or something similarly useless. ]

[ At least he seems polite enough, even if the heavy armor is making Anders wary. ]

I have to wonder whose idea it was to bring a bunch of non-combatants into a war zone.

[Flynn completely misses any unease]

If you need to blame anything, blame the BREW. According to the locals it has a bit of a mind of it's own and picks people based on some pattern none of us understand.

From what we're told, magic wouldn't work on the enemies here.

Though I think they could have at least let those of us who could heal keep those abilities.

My thoughts exactly! Fireballs aside, I've always been more of a healer - but even that's a moot point here. Non-magical healing can only do so much.

Magical healing works faster too. And, as it stands, I'm not sure if there are enough people with prior medical knowledge being brought here.

At least if we could still use magic, it would mean we could help them.

So basically this BREW thing brought a bunch of healers in and then took away our ability to heal? Absolutely brilliant. [ He pinches at the bridge of his nose. ]

Not that I can't still do some good without magic, of course, but it will be like using a rock when I need a scalpel.

[ Wow, there goes that blasted communication thing again, beeping relentlessly to tell her there's a new posting up. Wonderful, except Hawke doesn't care and even if she did she wouldn't know how to reply to any of them because the manual she tried to read was absolutely useless. What did "click" mean, exactly? And what did "video" mean, too, while she's at it. The best she can guess is that it means "moving pictures", because there's a moving picture on the screen now and it looks an awful lot like-

...oh!

It is Anders! Time to figure out how to use this thing properly, now! ]

Anders! Anders, is that really you? Can you hear me?

[ She's... shouting. It's impossible that he wouldn't be able to. And now she's pounding on the communicator, like one might pound on a door. That switches it to video.

Have fun looking at her fist hitting the communicator. ]

[ ... And then she stops.

And... tries to be more rational about it. Oh look, there she is on the mirror screen. Have a quick wave! She's waving to herself but... also to Anders. ]

I... have no idea if I'm doing this correctly, Anders, but it's me! It's Hawke. I didn't realize you were here, too! It's almost like a party! Did you you know Fenris is here as well? When are you going to answer me? Is this even working?

[ She... hits it again. But only once! But that's enough to turn it off. ]

[ Anders has something resembling a miniature heart attack when he hears Hawke's all-too-familiar voice suddenly blasting from his communicator. He spends a few seconds looking frantically around, assuming at first that Hawke is actually in the room with him or...shouting through the wall or something else that makes marginally more sense than talking though this strange hunk of metal. ]

-Hawke?!

So you could use magic? [...and he actually wanted that ability back? How odd.]

That was the implication, yes.

Forgive my surprise, but it wasn't very common where I am from...and being able to use magic was hardly what we would call a desirable trait.

[ His expression quickly slides into something less cheerful and more darkly self-deprecating. There's a nasty little smirk on his face, hard and sharp. ]

Well, that's not too far off from what I'm used to back home. I've simply learned to take pride in my abilities, rather than hating myself for them, as our captors so earnestly try to teach.

Oh, please, death isn't the worst thing that could happen to you. And so what if you can't fling fireballs anymore? Pick up a new skill.

[voice] medicus_sanctum December 24 2011, 04:02:06 UTC
....I will agree with you on the first point, but I can't say I'm particularly well-prepared to 'pick up a new skill'. Spending your whole life doing one thing at the expense of everything else tends to make career changes dicey.

Then you're in luck, since this place says they can train new people in a new skill. Trust me, you're going to be fine with something new.

Well, I'll have to trust your confidence is well-placed. Let's just hope they don't try to make me learn swordplay - I doubt that will end well for anyone.
