[ The communicator flicks on and Anders is reclining in the desk chair in front of it, doing his very best to look like he's comfortable in his surroundings. This is hilariously far from the truth, but there's something to be said for making a good show of it anyway. He's apparently not had time to go looking for new clothing, as his is still badly ( Read more... )

So you could use magic? [...and he actually wanted that ability back? How odd.]

That was the implication, yes.

Forgive my surprise, but it wasn't very common where I am from...and being able to use magic was hardly what we would call a desirable trait.

[ His expression quickly slides into something less cheerful and more darkly self-deprecating. There's a nasty little smirk on his face, hard and sharp. ]

Well, that's not too far off from what I'm used to back home. I've simply learned to take pride in my abilities, rather than hating myself for them, as our captors so earnestly try to teach.

[Well, now he really wishes he could switch to video. But he was vain enough to not want people to see he was injured and currently in the clinic.]

It seems I have dredged up some bad memories for you. I assure you, it hadn't been my intention to do that.

[The quality of his voice is soft, almost kind and smooth as a snake.]

However...from what you say, I don't think the two situations are all that similar.

[ As usual, Anders ignores the attempt at reconciliation. He's stubborn like that. ]

Mage-born children are rare and feared - I fail to see the difference.

[It's best that he did, really.]

You mentioned captors. That in itself is already a pretty big difference.

In my world, people who can use magic tend to die earlier than those without. The widely held belief is that the reason for this is because their magic is the product of a disease and that this disease can be contagious. No one, from where I come from, would even think of capturing a magic user for any reason because they'd be too afraid of catching whatever disease they have.

[ Oh, well, that certainly gets Anders to shut up for a few moments. His building rage turns into shocked surprise. ]

Well, I can't say there's not some similarities about the magic as a curse or disease, and those of us outside the Circle do tend to die terribly young...

But I honestly can't say if what you're describing is better or worse. At least your mages have some degree of freedom over their own lives, for what it's worth.

I would have to say that neither situation is ideal. Especially since the whole magic coming from a contagious disease theory is nothing more than a wives' tale.

[Not that he'd tried very hard to correct people. After all, as long as the people believed this then when large amounts of people started to turn into mindless magic using monsters from using his mineral powder, he would have a scapegoat to blame.]

Honestly, it sickens me to think that some people could be so ignorant.

Yes. [ Anders' voice breaks slightly, dipping into a lower, harsher octave. It's hardly noticeable, but his lighten oddly for a few second. ] It makes no sense in any world to continuously prosecute people simply because of what they were born with!

[ He blinks, and whatever it was that was going on stops. Anders scrubs at his face, tired by the subject matter. ] I take it from your word choice that you are not a mage yourself, then?

No. I have never been able to use magic. I am more of a swordsman myself.

Though I have always felt that magic users have the potential to do so much good for others. [Like helping him take over the world.] It is tragic that they cannot openly use their powers to help others without being scorned.

[ It's like music to Anders' ears to hear such things - but it also depresses him, because no amount of hopeful feelings in Death City will change anything back in Thedas. ]

If only opinions like yours were more common back home. Things need to change, but without support it just seems so helpless.

They weren't all that common where I come from either.

Then again, when has change ever come easily? Sometimes the only way for it to happen at all is to make it happen yourself.

[ There's a new quality to his voice at that suggestion, something hard and pained and angry and determined. ]

I know. And I will. Just because I know there is no chance at compromise doesn't mean it is the path I had hoped for.

[...he could recognize the harmonics in that voice. People who spoke like that could either be an asset or a danger depending on whether or not you are the one standing with them or against them. They were also the kind of people who had the most interesting reactions.

He can't say he understands his sentiments though. The concept of 'compromise' doesn't exist in Waltz's personal dictionary.]

We do what we must.

[Then, with all the grace and indolence of the aristocrat he was raised to be.]

I seem to have neglected to introduce myself. I am Count Waltz of Forte.

[ It takes a few moments for Anders to respond. Emotionally working himself up like that tends to wear him out, and not only because it tends to make Justice's voice louder in his head.

He does reply eventually though, and seems to be back into something approximating a calm mood. ] Good to meet you. Do you go by your title here? [ ...not that he's very accustomed to respecting such things, but Waltz has been good conversation so far. ]
