OKAY there's new people in this bar and I wanted to be all profound and informative, but, you know, whatever, it's sunday and it's warm outside and let's just talk in the comments.

How is everyone, how was your week, and here's a meme I stole from

SUCH ANALYSIS. somebraveapollo September 7 2014, 22:04:02 UTC
Mmm, I feel the need to make a distinction between h/c the genre and h/c the trope. Like, h/c the genre is when the story has a particular cadence and the main theme of the story is recovery, and everything serves that theme and it's all uplifting and appropriately tragic and hopeful. Werewolf Marines is a great example, so are Mirror Dance and Memory. This is basically every fic you ever wrote, and almost every fic I ever wrote (the only exception I can name offhand is the one with the kitty ears cunnilingus). I adore this genre beyond all measure. I think one of the biggest things fic can offer is that you can write h/c is that you have readily available characters you already care about - so you can just focus on their recoveries. (This is also why Mirror Dance and Memory reallllllllllllly work better if you've read the previous books. Echo's Wolf is, I think, going to get even more effectively hurt/comforty as it progresses, because we know and love everyone already ( ... )

Circus AU!

CIRCUS AUs! Okay I considered this question v. closely, because this was the only trope that I did not have a readily formed opinion about. I'm not sure I ever read circusfic? Nor anything set in a circus, except Doctor Doolittle, which was one of my favourite books as a kid (the one with the runaway circus seal and sad retired horses, not the one in Africa, which just kind of annoyed me), and Something Wicked This Way Comes, which I mostly appreciated for the non-circus parts (but which, admittedly, is v. fanfic-like! I hope there's Nightshade/Halloway fic ( ... )

Well, hi there! My week was shortened (at least workwise) by having two extra free days after Labor Day, and I took advantage of it by cooking and cleaning windows. These are the sorts of things that I enjoy. My two workdays ... didn't suck, which is probably the best I can say, even though I love the work I do. It was good to have the weekend again, full of sunshine, and a basement cleanup (wait, why are all my recent happy memories about housework?) and watching Dr. Who and some anime, and writing a Marvel Avengers fic that has no Avengers in it.

The meme ... let's see: historical AU?

Extended weekends are the besssst, and it's kind of awesome that you enjoy housework enough to have happy memories about it! Though, actually, cleaning out one of my harddrives definitely one of the highlights of my week.

I will check out your Chitauri fic, the idea sounds glorious! What anime are you watching? I am a little behind on Sailor Moon Crystal, but totally loving it.

Historical AU opinions coming up in a bit! <3

Oh, cleaning out hard drives - I love it! Any time I can turn something disorganized in my totally disorganized life into something a little more organized? It's party time!

Hmm ... anime that we're watching? Just finished Kill la Kill and I pronounce it only a tiny piece short of a masterpiece in my opinion. On the other hand, Barakomon, the story of a calligraphy artist who goes to a hayseed country town to regain his mojo, and who develops a fantastic and completely non-skeevy relationship with a seven year old girl, is truly a masterpiece, right at the opposite end of the spectrum from Kill la Kill. We're rewatching the OVA Summer Wars, which I think is proof that Miyazaki-level talent has always been there in televised anime (everyone forgets that's where he got his start), and we're probably going to watch the latest Ghost in the Shell OVA. Also, quieter and quite lovely newish series are Rail Wars (which involve no wars, and lots of trains, more than a bit of fan service, but not enough to make me say "no", and which my train- ( ... )

Hah, never such a thing as TOO much information, I shall check all these out. I'd like to hear more about your enjoyment of Kill La Kill! It doesn't sound like quite my thing, but I love hearing why people love the thing they love. And what kept it from being entirely a masterpiece?

OKAY HISTORICAL AUs! Well, I don't read World War II things, but other than that, I love historical AUs. (I imagine there's other (mostly recent-history) settings I would also not read - like, Gulag-fic, or something, but people don't tend to write those that I've seen.)

But, okay, Regency fic! Prohibition era fic! Romans! Vikings! I enjoy it all. I have a worse than average grasp of history, so inaccuracy doesn't bother me - I really don't notice it, or if I do, I am just proud of myself for catching the anachronism - but it is an extra delight when people write well-researched fic that I can learn from. But I love historical AUs in particular because I love it when characters I love are thrown into a different system of values and power dynamics ( ... )

Haaaa, I approve of this meme, as you know!

Tell me your thoughts on Language Barrier (I actually don't think I've ever read a fic with that trope? I am still interested)!

You should do the meme! It is excellent and promotes profound thought. in the BenJanuary circus cyborg arena AU, Rose would do pyrotechnics, and Minou would have a troupe of genetically modified superrats. Hannibal would be a clown? Ben would be like, oh my god why are we in a circus cyborg arena AU. I shall deliver your Language Barrier thoughts, but tomorrow, because I will retire early tonight!

I will! Maybe. If I get around to it, ha.

Oooo, I don't think I've seen a sci-fi circus. This is a cool idea! They could have all sorts of future technology to do things with. And, yes, Rose would constantly be fiddling with it and inventing new things to do even better tricks. And I LOVE Minou and pet intelligent rats.

But noooo, I don't like clowns. Hannibal can be a snake charmer, with some sort of alien snake? Or Ben can be a magician and Hannibal can be the person he saws in half. Or Hannibal can tell fortunes with a deck of cards!

Also there is always cheating and having them just be musicians. Circuses have music!
