Reviewing. You know, I'm having much more of a hard time with this reviewing every day thing than I was expecting. Not because the reviewing is difficult, but because it's hard to find fic that I can get through and review. No, not because of the quality, but because of the subject or where they're posted. I want to review here at LJ, but a lot of ( Read more... )

I'm afraid my answer is going to be quite useless and unhelpful but I'll have a go ( ... )

Never useless! All answers help, even if I can't always understand them.

To be honest I'm not entirely sure, but from writing AU roleplay I can definitely say it's seeing characters have slightly different relationships with other characters. Or for example, I write a private vampire AU which for the moment is following Shuuhei. Now in cannon Shuuhei was saved by Kensei as a kid, Shuuhei evidently looks up to him but so far that's been it. So far in cannon they've not met again or anything like that. Where as in the AU we've been able to give them that reunion and establish a relationship between the two (more a father son relationship despite how much I like my Kensei/Shuuhei)

But couldn't you simply write/rp future!fic, or something? Those are the king of AU I don't have a problem with. Writing about possible futures is awesome. However, adding someone being a vampire to that... : P

But I guess what I'm trying to say is AU is a chance for you to bring the characters you like and something else you like reading about (whether it' ( ... )

I could (and I have started though it never really got anywhere XDDDD). Hahaha I don't know i just find it fun writing AU (when the mood/idea strikes me). Maybe AU AUs are like marmite, you love them or you hate them and you just do XDD

Perhaps I've not quite grown out of my pre-teen fic mindset but there you go. And if AU plot bunnies strike there's not much else i can do XDD

Crossovers... I like them if they're well written and the two fandoms can be related (and the authors not just grabbed their two or more favourite fandoms and shoved them together and had to make them work by something they've added in) Or it's gone into pure crack (I'm sure a Sailor Moon/Bleach crossover would be good for a laugh but not much else XDDD)

Well, I have no problem with people writing it for enjoyment. Far from it. I'm just trying to understand the appeal, I suppose. :) Canon fic as stagnant and boring, though? I think that also on the author. I'd like to think a capable writer could make anything exciting, regardless of the subject.

Yeah, I can understand that, but at the same time if it wouldn't ever happen in canon, then it seems out of character for me, and if it could happen, then simply writing future!fic or other such canon-abiding fic would be fine by me. (Again, I have no problem with AU that use canon, such as 'what if' fics, or future!fic, or things like that. ^^)

And that said, why does it seem out of character for you? I'm curious now.

Well, that was a reply to this statement:

You can get character development that might not ever happen with the canon.I gave a two-fold answer, because I wasn't really sure if you meant that you thought it might never happen in canon because it didn't fit canon, or that it might not ever happen in canon, but would definitely fit in and therefore could actually happen one day ( ... )

Though that leads me to another thought, do you like crossovers? I think I'm actually more likely to read an AU then a crossover lol and yet thinking about it now crossovers can fulfil similar things to AUs. Just a thought.I'm not very fond of either, no. On the other hand, though, I can understand crossovers a bit more. Someone wants to combine two things they really enjoy and so they write a crossover combining all the elements of both canons. It's tricky and not my thing, but I can understand the fascination. AUs, on the other hand, seem the exact opposite to me. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but where crossovers use both canons, AUs seem to take away almost all canon information - except characters and characterisation - and replace them with something else entirely. I'm extremely fond of the canon subjects, or I wouldn't be part of the fandom, so I don't quite get that as much as I do, say, crossovers. Does that make sense? : P ( ... )

I think it's just the difference between how people approach series. :) I'm always get into a series/movie/book/etc for the characters. Even in my original fiction, the characters come to me first, and the world building comes after that. So to me, the point of fanfiction is to explore how characters would react to events that would not or could not happen in canon- whether that's a pairing, or taking it further into a complete AU. That's the same thing, to me.

It's just a matter of perspective, I guess *g*. You said to blue_eyesgirl that "If I wanted to write something, then I'd try my hardest to make it work in the canon setting. If it wouldn't work together, then I wouldn't want to use it either."For me, just because it doesn't work with canon doesn't mean that I stop wanting to use the idea ( ... )
