Reviewing.
You know, I'm having much more of a hard time with this reviewing every day thing than I was expecting. Not because the reviewing is difficult, but because it's hard to find fic that I can get through and review. No, not because of the quality, but because of the subject or where they're posted. I want to review here at LJ, but a lot of the stories are actually posted at FF.net.
Then there's the fact that a lot - and I mean a lot - of the stories posted at LJ either include established relationships resulting in children or AUs. I like neither. -_-
First of all, the whole 'couple gets kids' is boring to me. Now, I have no problem with people writing it, as we all like different things, but it's just not for me. I find that characters who are turned into housewives and live for their children just don't work for me as well as their kick-ass persona before. I'm sure there are plenty of awesome stories out there on the subject, but I prefer things to be without cute twins or boy/girl combos resembling the parents to a t.
AUs also never worked for me. Now, I'm not talking about 'what if (insert character) didn't die' or other 'what if' AU scenarios. I'm talking about the 'Ichigo and Rukia are turned into fashion consultants' or 'Renji is a criminal and Byakuya his lawyer' kind. Where the entire situation they existed in before has been drastically changed.
I just don't get that, at all. I can acknowledge that there are AUs out there that are expertly written, but I never understood the need to write it. Personally, I love the canon they come from and I prefer them in that canon. Changing everything except their name and basic personality - though even that changes, sometimes - just seems strange to me. It's almost as if you're changing 90% of canon just to write someone as a lawyer. (Again, I'm fine with people writing it, I'm just pondering on why I don't like AU stories.)
If I wanted to write about fashion consultants, or whatever else you can think of, I'd create an original story. If I desperately wanted a character with Byakuya's personality in there, then, hey, write a character like that. Just using Byakuya's name in a setting that doesn't fit who he is in canon seems...wrong? I don't know, I just never liked the idea. I've seen AUs that were written wonderfully - with awesome scenes, style and flow - but I just didn't enjoy it. I like my boys in their own world, not one where they don't belong. Does that make sense? XD
So, yeah, basically what I'm curious about:
Why do you write AU? What interests you about it?
I'd love to get opinions on this. :) (And I do hope I didn't offend anyone with this. Like I said, I'm more than fine with people writing AU, or parents!fic, or, heck, gender-bending, it's just not my thing.)
