Doctor Who Season 6b Premiere Reaction/Review

Aug 27, 2011 15:46

I managed to find a good livestream after all, so I got to watch the epp before any possible power loss, yay for that! \o/ On the other hand, the episode itself was pretty um, special...O_o

Give me someone I like... )

Hated it. I preferred River when she had fewer magical powers or whatever.

Plus, the fact that they got to "raise" their child so it's magically all okay is just horrifying.

Omg thank you, ITA, glad you feel the same...and yes, seriously, how is growing up with someone "raising them" and count as raising your child? The fact that Amy and Rory will never get to raise their child is so sad/terrible, but the show isn't treating it as such....:/

Lol, that gif is once again so appropriate for Moffat...*sigh*

Why? Just...why? WHY CAN'T IT BE WRITTEN SO THAT MERE MORTALS LIKE MYSELF UNDERSTAND THE THING?!

But that's just it, IMMORTALS shouldn't understand it either, because IT MAKES NO SENSE. Even if some people claim it does...

Haha. So that's why you are so spiteful about DW ships. You're all hardcore at Doctor/Rose shipping? Not that I'm not...just, I end up shipping almost everybody with the Doctor haha. But we need to have a Doctor/Rose love fest at some point. Although I don't think the TARDIS ships them - it was going in order. I actually thought the whole Doctor/Little Amelia thing was quite touching!Eh, I don't really think I'm spiteful? O_o I mean, I don't like Doctor/River, no, but that's it (okay well and 11/Amy too I guess, but mainly because I get a whole grandfather/granddaughter vibe with them, and because there's RORY come on, and I like Amy/Rory--not because of Doctor/Rose, I was totally going in ready to ship the new companion/Doctor), and it has largely ( ... )

HAHAHA. TRUFAX :D

RE word choice spiteful, I didn't mean to offend you - you sound a little cheesed off! I'm saaaawwwy :(

I disliked Simon/Alisha as well for similar reasons to why I disliked Doctor/River, and they have nothing to do with Rose (nor conflict with any major ship I have), do they?

No. No they do not.

but not River/Doctor, sorry.
GAH. IT'S OKAY, I THINK I WILL LIVE. :P :D
You know, I don't ship them that much. Just sayin'...

Rose showed up twice? I totally missed that. I just saw Rose, Martha, Donna, Little!Amelia... Meh. If Rose came up twice then you totes win, TARDIS ships 'em :) Also, this point is mute now, but I'm going to go for it anyway because I am ME: if Little!Amelia came up first then no chance for fun cameo appearances...

No I meant in the little extra scene in s5, the one between River's epps and Vampires of Venice on the DVD/YT? And the TARDIS shows some past companions...have you seen it?

YOU WIN ALL THE THINGS

Yesss I totally thought they were going to go after the Doctor, but nope! River trumps Doctor. That's why she's a Mary Sue:

NOBODY TRUMPS THE GODDAMN DOCTOR

NOBODY TRUMPS THE GODDAMN DOCTOR

I didn't think of it that way, but you're right, ugh, Suish again...and that's not even a legitimate trumping of the Doctor, it makes no sense! O_o

I actually liked the episode fine. When I heard about the Third Reich setting I was really really concerned. So I guess I was relieved it wasn't so upsetting in that regard.

I agree with what you wrote about "a real war criminal" - I also instantly thought they were talking about The Doctor and that it would have made for some great opportunities.

I thought Karen Gillan was fantastic in this episode. And despite the whole "I have to get my parents together so I exists" thing, I did like Mels. She was sassy.

And I agree, happy to see Rose and Martha and little Amelia.

Just my 2¢.

So I guess I was relieved it wasn't so upsetting in that regard.

But...it was. I mean, Moffat essentially BELITTLES the Holocaust, the deaths of 10 million people, as not that big a deal, in saying that River Song, for killing ONE man, is a far far greater war criminal than Hitler...what part of that isn't upsetting?! O_o Plus it's just so tacky to use a sensitive topic like Hitler anyway when it in the end had nothing to do with the plot really, they could have just picked a made-up space war criminal or whatever, this is sci-fi...

I did like Mels. She was sassy.Meh, I don't always like it when people are sassy just for the sake of being sassy (unless they are in fact ~*SASSY*~, lol sorry, can't resist puns! :p), and I'm mostly annoyed with how much of an obvious retcon she is, I mean, Moffat couldn't even have the logical and self-evident reference when Amy reveals to Rory that she named her baby Melody? Like, "Wait, after our old friend Mels?" would have been perfect. Or you know, elsewhere in s5 and 6, rather than springing ( ... )

with the plot really, they could have just picked a made-up space war criminal or whatever, this is sci-fi...That's what I always think when they decide to incorporate the Third Reich in Sci-Fi. I was pretty annoyed when I heard the title. I'm not one who finds that there is anything amusing about Nazi Germany, and yet there are so many movies that have Hitler as a comedic/parody element. The reason why I said, it didn't upset me so much was that it was only a silly sidenote. Whereas I was really annoyed with all the fascist episodes back then with the Seventh Doctor. Basically because they conveyed that such evil can only be fought with alien help because it is in itself more alien than human. This denial of the human capability of evil I find an upsetting notion ( ... )

Ah well I haven't seen any Seven yet, so IDK about those Fascist plots...I agree with someone though who said they think the Daleks represent Hitler figures (exterminate all races that are different! Aggressive invaders!) well anyway, and that they should stick with that represetation...

And lol, well I was kind of bored, though mostly just confused I guess!

We already sort of discussed this, but pretty much THIS to everything you said. Ugh. Moffat, how could you? I can't remember the last time I was so offended. I loved, loved, LOVED the flashback, and the callback to Rose, Martha, and Donna made me flail, but using Hitler and retconning in Mels ( ... )

Again, glad we agree on all this! ;) Sometimes I see reactions and I'm like, "did I just watch the same episode? O_o" lol...(and we most of the time agree on the ~important things at least...;))

I mean, seriously, would it have been SO DIFFICULT for Rory and Amy to have mentioned this so-called best friend ONCE in their lives? Like, oh, idk, when Rory finds out the baby's named Melody? "Great, just what Mels needs for her ego" or SOMETHING acknowledging that this person existed prior to this episode. Moffat is GREAT with the one episodes, but this is pretty much the perfect evidence of why he is not equipped to plot out an entire series. Because RTD? RTD sure as HELL would have mentioned her earlier instead of just having her plop in.THISSSS! I mean anyone who thinks he actually planned this arc all out in advance is just kidding themselves...one of the problems with Amy, and ways in which Rose/Martha/Donna were always better in terms of characterization/development was the fact that you often had them referencing their friends and ( ... )
