Stereo Heart
Part (3/3)
By: Sharl/zielddhy
Junsu sighed as he stared at his reflection. His eyes had bags under them, his cheeks were sunken, and he looked like a walking zombie without the decaying flesh part. Actually he wouldn’t mind the decaying flesh part because it’d be an indication that he was dead already and could participate in the making of World War Z. As a real life zombie in fact, that’d get him paid higher than the other extras for sure.
Plus, being dead meant that he was supposed to be unable feeling anything, so he didn’t have to be hurt every time he passed his favorite bakery because it reminded him of Changmin. He couldn’t even go there anymore and he hated it.
He reached for the toothbrush and squeezed out some toothpaste. Junho’s phone call last night still rang in his ears. Su, look at it this way. A break up is like a broken mirror. It is better to leave it broken than hurt yourself trying to fix it. Now go out and get yourself laid.
Junho’s advice sounded tempting, but Junsu was not ready to go get himself laid. He wasn’t ready for another date that would lead to sex. In fact he hadn’t had sex with Changmin yet. So why would getting laid be a good distraction? He’d just mope about Changmin and his seemingly awesome sex skills that Junsu hadn’t tasted yet.
After few times of gargling, Junsu casted one last dark looks at his pathetic reflection. He had promised to spend the whole day with Jaejoong and Yoochun on the pretext that the two friends had seen enough of Junsu locking himself in his apartment.
Jaejoong wanted to shop while Yoochun wanted to have some drinks. They couldn’t decide so they were going to do both. After that Jaejoong insisted on Junsu’s therapy session in his office again because the last time they did it was in Junsu’s apartment and they were both distracted by cat shows on Animal Planet so it was deemed unproductive.
Junsu cleaned Bakira and Leo’s toilets, gave them enough cat food and water for the whole day and stepped out from his apartment.

One hour later he was in the shopping district, watching as Jaejoong changed clothes from red sweater to maroon turtleneck to crimson shirt before finally deciding on ruby jacket. Junsu huffed and pouted. The store didn’t have anything he liked so far, and so was the case with the last three stores. Numerous shopping bags were around his feet but none of them were his.
He just wanted to go home and eat more ice creams and be buried under his fluffy blankets. Junsu sighed again.
“Don’t slouch Su, it’s most unbecoming,” Jaejoong tsk-ed once.
“Can I go home?”
“No,” came the chorused answer from his two friends. Junsu turned to glare at Yoochun because he thought the man was comfortably reading the newest playboy so how could he heard what Junsu was saying? Junsu never knew that Yoochun was good at multi-tasking.
“You can’t go home Su, you’ll just eat more ice cream and get fat.”
Junsu huffed again. Jaejoong was right of course. At this rate and with all the ice cream he ate, Junsu would gain an extra ten pounds. And no doubt it’d all be dumped and pooled on his butt, making him look even fatter than he actually was. And it’d just make Changmin hated him even more. Changmin would probably be glad that he had broken up with fat Junsu earlier.
The thought suddenly made Junsu felt worse.
Yoochun looked up from the magazine he was reading. "Are you still thinking about Changmin?"
Junsu turned to look pitifully at his best friend. "Yeah."
“Oh okay." He went back reading his books, all the while ignoring the indignant glares Junsu threw him. Crossing his arms, Junsu leaned back in his seat and pouted again. Why couldn’t his brain just stop working or let him think about something else rather than Changmin?
Junsu was in deep shit and he knew it, because there’s no way he could stop thinking about the tall handsome man. Not when the caterpillar in his stomach still yearned to be butterfly again whenever he thought about Changmin.

Two weeks later, Junsu was having his lunch in Jaejoong’s office.
He had brought them some cheeseburgers and fries with few side dishes, totally unhealthy and greasy but Jaejoong said there’s nothing wrong with junk food once in a while. Yoochun was stuck with a girl that was way too nagging for his taste but he couldn’t just brush her off because apparently she just had a boob job.
Somewhere between gravy fries and salad, Jaejoong’s phone chirped. “Oh look, Yunho is on his way here.”
Junsu couldn’t help but smile seeing his friend’s happy smile. “Hang on to him hyung, he sounds like a really great guy.” Jaejoong was rarely in serious relationship before but Yunho was an exception. It had been almost a month since they started going out and so far everything was going smoothly. Junsu hoped everything would remain that way.
“He really is. We plan to watch a movie and have dinner tonight at that Japanese restaurant on Eight Avenue, do you want to come?”
“No I think I’ll just go home.”
“Oh come on Su, it’ll be fun! You should join us.”
He was torn between not wanting to feel like a third wheel and not wanting to disappoint his friend. Junsu knew Jaejoong was trying to make him feel better and for that Junsu was grateful. Finally he succumbed to Jaejoong’s puppy eyes.
Ten minutes later Junsu was feeling very full. There were still plenty of food left. He glanced mournfully at the leftovers, wishing that he was home so that he could feed them to his cats. They always appreciated variety other than just regular cat foods.
Junsu then went to the bathroom in Jaejoong’s office, hoping that maybe with some cold water he might be able to keep the nausea at bay. He was in the middle of washing his face when he heard the door opened and Jaejoong’s excited voice. Yunho must be here already.
Few seconds later Jaejoong sounded angry and Junsu frowned. Why would Jaejoong be angry at Yunho? What happened? Jaejoong was never angry without a reason. What on earth could Yunho have done to make him angry? Junsu grew even more worried when he heard Jaejoong’s angry rant. “What the fuck is he doing here?!” Opening the bathroom door, he quickly stepped back into the office and froze instantly.
Changmin was there. With Yunho. Suddenly Junsu couldn’t breathe, his eyes were fixated on the tall form of Changmin, whose eyes stared back in disbelief at him.
“Junsu…” he heard Changmin spoke. He looked just as surprised as Junsu was.
Junsu felt his stomach dropped. He couldn’t deal with this. Not now, not ever. “H-hyung, I think I’ll just go home now. Sorry I can’t join you tonight.” With that said, Junsu immediately ran out from the office. He didn’t even glance at Changmin because he knew Changmin would immediately see his face.
He didn’t stop running until he reached his apartment and by the time he finally did, he couldn’t see anything else beyond the blurred hallway.

There was a knock on the door.
Junsu blew his nose noisily and wiped his tears. Bakira meow-ed once, seemingly distress because his master was crying. Leo was comfortably licking his paws but hissed at the door once the knocking started again.
“Junsu?” Changmin’s voice was heard through the door.
His heart skipped a beat. And then Junsu grew angry at himself. Why did his heart still feel the butterfly whenever Changmin called his name when the man had dumped him? He hadn’t even contacted Junsu since they broke up. He then channeled the anger to Changmin. “Go away!”
“Why?”
“Because… because I have Bakira and Leo here!” Junsu shouted in relief because he had found a perfect excuse. “You will think about your dad’s euthanasia again and I don’t want you to kill my cats! Plus they don’t like you already!”
“….why they have disliked me??”
“Because you’re mean!” as soon as the words came out from his mouth, Junsu felt incredibly stupid. And not to mention very childish too.
He could hear Changmin sighed from the other side of the door. “Come on Junsu, open the door please. I need to talk to you.”
“No!”
“Please? I have that cake and the soufflé that you like, and I bring cat foods for peace offering.”
Junsu bit his lip. He hadn’t eaten any cake and soufflé from that bakery because everything reminded him of Changmin. He really missed eating them. And the cat food sounded tempting too, his buffer stock on them was getting low lately and he hadn’t shopped for more.
But it was Changmin’s pleading voice that finally made him cave in. “I just want to talk, that’s all. Please?”
He didn’t open the door, but he unlocked it. Apparently Changmin took the hint because ten seconds later the door was opened. Junsu was determined not to look at Changmin so he turned his back and looked at the wall. Bakira was in his hand while Leo was hissing at Changmin.
“You’re right, they don’t like me,” he heard Changmin commented drily.
“Let’s just get this over with. Tell me more lies and after that you can leave.”
A sigh. “Junsu-“
“Go on. You can start now. I promise I will listen carefully.” His voice was quivering a bit. Tears started to gather again but Junsu refused to let them fall. His right hand that was stroking Bakira’s fur began to shake and he had to take a deep breath to calm himself.
He hadn’t heard Changmin’s footsteps so Junsu was really surprised when two strong hands turned him around. He blinked and stared at the other’s face. Bakira had stopped purring and was now hissing at Changmin, as if he understood that his master was upset because of this man.
“Look, I’m sorry I lied to you before. The reason I broke up with you is because I got a scholarship to Germany for my PhD. It might take two, even three years to-Ooww!” Changmin suddenly shouted in pain, his explanation was cut off.
Junsu looked down to see Leo was clawing at Changmin’s legs. Four of his paws pierced through the man’s trousers and it must’ve hurt like hell for sure. Junsu hadn’t cut Leo’s claws for some time now; he meant to do that tomorrow.
“Leo! Stop it!” Junsu crouched and set down Bakira who was still hissing at Changmin. A part of him cheered because apparently his cats were smart enough to take revenge on Changmin while the other part of him was worried. Cats’ claws could be very sharp. He needed to take care of the wounds immediately. And maybe he needed to pay for Changmin’s designed trousers.
Finally he managed to peel Leo off Changmin. By the time Changmin sighed in relief, Leo had joined Bakira in their hissing tantrums while Junsu hurriedly get the first aid kit.
“it’s okay, it doesn’t hurt,” Changmin said.
“But you should get it checked. At least let me see your wounds.”
Changmin smiled grimly. “I’m sure it’s fine, it’s more of a scratch rather than injury anyway. But if it might make you feel better, can you sit down and let’s talk?”
Junsu bit down his lips, fingers clutching at the first aid box. He didn’t want to talk right now, if ever, because he knew he’d just cry again. He had just begun to feel better after three long weeks but Changmin’s appearance screw the whole thing again.
However, somehow his legs decided to play games and before he knew it Junsu had sat down across Changmin. He scowled while Changmin looked at him. “Okay. So like I said earlier. I’m sorry I lied to you before. That wasn’t the real reason why I broke up with you.”
Changmin shifted in his seat and winced a bit. Junsu knew the scratch must’ve hurt. He was about to say something to keep Changmin from moving around when he remembered that he was supposed to stay mad at the man. So Junsu clamped his mouth shut while Changmin spoke again.
“The real reason is that I got a full scholarship to Germany. It’ll help me getting my PhD, but it will also take two maybe even three years at least to complete it.” This time Changmin was the one who bit his lip, looking very much like a young and confused man. It made Junsu’s heart clench.
He blinked once. “Wait. So you’re saying that you broke up with me because you don’t want me to feel hurt when you take that scholarship?”
Changmin looked away.
Junsu was torn between wanting to laugh or cry. He was happy because apparently they didn’t break up because Changmin hated him. Or because Changmin found Junsu too fat or because Changmin didn’t like Junsu’s cats (although this one might change real soon).
“That’s a stupid reason,” Junsu found himself saying. “You hurt me when you lie to me.”
Changmin winced. “I know that now, and I’m sorry. I should’ve just been truthful from the beginning. It’s just…” he sighed again.
Junsu frowned and fidgeted. “Well, it sucks when you’re so far away. We can’t have dates anymore and the time difference will be hard to deal with. But it’s not like we will lose all contacts right? There’s email and phone calls and voice mails and stuff.”
“And we can Skype,” he added again. “I can’t say anything for now except that we can only know after we’ve tried that, you know? If you want, that is.”
“I want to! I mean, I’d like to give it a try.” Changmin smiled.
Junsu smiled back. He felt a thousand times better than he had ever been in the last few weeks. He could feel the caterpillar in his stomach disappearing and morphing to a butterfly again. Hopefully this time it would stay that way.
He blushed when Changmin was still smiling at him. “Thank you Junsu. Again, I’m really sorry I have li-Oowww!”
“Leo!” Junsu shrieked.

One Year Later
Junsu nervously shifted from one foot to another. He was currently standing at the arrival gate at Incheon. Changmin’s flight from Berlin had just landed twenty minutes ago and so he should be here anytime now.
Finally he saw the tall form he had missed so much. “Changmin!”
The other’s smile was the one thing that made Junsu ran to him. Seeing it through the Skype was good, but the real thing was definitely better. He buried himself in the broad shoulders. Was Changmin getting taller or was it just Junsu who got shorter? Nevertheless, he whispered, “Welcome home, I’ve missed you.”
There was a kiss on his head. “I’ve missed you too. Eight months without seeing you in person is just too long.”
It would be another two years before Changmin could go home and stay in Korea for good, but somehow Junsu instinctively knew that the butterfly in his stomach would still be there after two years. Maybe even after five or ten years. But that was all for later. For now he was content to be in Changmin’s arms again.
“Come on! Let’s go eat on the bakery, I’ve ordered a special raspberry soufflé just for today!”
