Part (2/3)

“This is totally unnecessary,” Junsu said sulkily.

He popped an ice cube and glared at Jaejoong who seemed very comfortable making gooey eyes at the bartender. He tugged on Jaejoong’s sleeve, trying to get his attention, “Hyung, why don’t you go home? Jiji might feel lonely.”

“Nonsense, I just bought her a new gorilla toys she can play with.”

Junsu huffed and leaned back in his seat. “Why Yoochun is not here again?” If Yoochun was here then maybe Yoochun could keep Jaejoong busy so Junsu could sneak out and meet Changmin somewhere else.

Or Yoochun would just end up making fun of Junsu too. Junsu suddenly felt glad Yoochun was not there. And then he regretted it two seconds later because that was a mean thing to think about and Junsu sent Yoochun mental apologies.

“Something with his brother’s dog funeral.”

Oh.

Well, that sucks. Junsu knew Yoohwan loved his dog more than anything and losing pets was terrible. He tried not to think about what Bakira and Leo and their respectably short mortal lives. Maybe he shouldn’t have gone out tonight. Maybe he should’ve stayed in his apartments and played with his cats because oh dear god they could be dead anytime. Bakira was already six months old and Leo was much older being a nine-months old and Junsu really shouldn't be out tonight-

“Junsu!”

The cat ramble stopped. “What?”

Jaejoong tsk-ed once and tapped his foot impatiently. “So where is this guy? He’s already ten minutes late and I’m not amused.”

“So maybe you should go home!” Junsu replied rather hopefully.

“Nice try, Su.”

Junsu wilted in his seat and pouted some more. Changmin was late. He checked his phone and yep, nothing. No text messages, no phone calls, no nothing. What if something bad happened? What if Changmin got into an accident? What if Changmin stood Junsu up?

Somehow from his peripheral vision Junsu saw two towering forms came in. He smiled. Changmin looked amazing as usual. And one other unidentified gorgeous looking stranger walked with him. Changmin spotted Junsu and sent him a smile. Those mismatched eyes twinkled and the butterfly in Junsu’s stomach flapped its wings happily.

Settle, Junsu told the butterfly. The wing flapped one time in agreement.

“Hey, I’m sorry we’re late, the traffic is really bad,” Changmin said.

Junsu could feel himself blushing when Changmin kissed his cheek. “It’s okay,” he said with a smile. All thoughts about cats and accidents flew away from his head because Changmin was here now and it made him giddy like a schoolgirl. “And who’s your friend?”

"Oh right. Junsu, this is Yunho. Yunho, this is Junsu and his friend."

"Jaejoong," the therapist introduced himself.

Yunho smiled. It was a really cute and gorgeous smile. Junsu swore he could see Jaejoong melt slightly on the spot.

Two weeks later, Changmin began to act strange.

It was like he was avoiding Junsu. All phone calls went directly to voicemail and text messages were rarely replied. Something was definitely up and it was not Junsu’s mood. In fact he pouted and sulked and ate ice cream while mourning over his love life. Junsu didn’t understand because he thought the bar meeting was a success.

“He seems like a good guy, Su. And he brought Yunho,” says Jaejoong.

“Can you ask him to bring his sister to meet me next time?” says Yoochun.

With Jaejoong’s and Yoochun’s (if Jaejoong approves, then who am I to say otherwise?) green light, Junsu thought it was great for Changmin. So why did Changmin avoid him? Did he do something wrong or was there something he wasn’t seeing?

Maybe Junsu was just being paranoid. Maybe Changmin didn’t intentionally avoiding him. Maybe he was just too busy, he was a doctor after all. With positive things and better mindset, Junsu stopped eating ice cream and played with Bakira’s whiskers.

Four minutes later Junsu went out and bought three more ice cream pints.

Three days later, Changmin called him and they agreed to have another raspberry soufflé. Junsu was ecstatic and he left his apartment with spring on his steps. What he didn’t expect however, was that Changmin was breaking up with him.

His mind reeled on possible causes. It wasn’t like he knew what was going on in Changmin’s mind. Was it because Junsu was a cat lady who wanted to adopt six more cats? But they were so adorable and Changmin once said the idea was cute so it wasn’t that.

“Is this because of Jaejoong?” Junsu knew he shouldn’t have brought Jaejoong that night. Tougher men than Changmin had succumbed and admitted defeat to Jaejoong’s charm. Well the thing was that Junsu loved Jaejoong so if Changmin picked him, Junsu would quietly stepped away and wished them happiness.

“What? No! And who’s Jaejoong?” Changmin furrowed his brows in confusion. Oh, so it wasn’t because of Jaejoong.

“My friend from the other night,” Junsu answered. He stabbed his spoon into the raspberry soufflé viciously. “Then why? I thought, I thought we have a good thing going on, we have fun, we laugh. Or am I the only one who thinks that?”

Changmin looked away. “No you’re not, I have fun too.”

“Then why??”

“Just… because okay! My… dad killed one of his patients’ cats with euthanasia the other day and the cat looked at me like I’m the one who’s guilty about that while actually the owner was the one who requested it and the cat reminded me of you so right now I can’t look at you without thinking about the cat.”

Junsu blinked once. And he blinked again. Well that was a total lie if he ever heard one. Changmin’s dad was not a vet, he was a businessman. The guy had his own law firm downtown and was actually surprisingly supportive in Changmin’s decision to become a doctor. He was not at all perturbed with the fact that his son was gay. In fact before that meeting with Jaejoong at the bar the other night, Changmin had hinted that he wanted Junsu to meet his parents sometimes.

Which meant that ‘vet killed the cat thing’ was a lie. And Changmin was lying because he didn’t want to be truthful with Junsu.

Junsu narrowed his eyes. "If you are going to lie about why you're breaking up with me at least tell me a good lie." He then walked away, eyes blinking away tears.

Junsu’s next therapy session with Jaejoong was conducted in his apartment because Junsu just wanted to continue moping.

He hadn’t gone out from his room for a week now, surviving mainly from Chinese takeout and ice cream and chocolate. Even Bakira and Leo were forced to scrap the remains of his Chinese takeout for two days straight before Junsu felt bad and gave them proper cat food.

Yoochun and Jaejoong finally barged in to Junsu’s apartment when he didn’t take their phone calls for three days straight. Junsu was a very social person so that could only mean one wanting: Changmin had broken up with Junsu and now he was moping and sulking. The two best friends find Junsu buried under his blanket stroking Leo’s fur while Bakira slept peacefully on his own bed. Yoochun and Jaejoong were mildly sympathetic and they showed it in their own unique ways. Take Yoochun, for example:

"Junsu, look at it this way. You are nobody. Nobody is perfect. Therefore, you are perfect."

He scowled at Yoochun, "This is a therapy session; conducted between the therapist and the patient. And just them."

"Usually, but not always; I have a special privilege as you best friend,” Yoochun smiled, “And what’s up with this guy anyway, didn’t he know that breakups always cause pain?”

"I've been dumped before, Yoochun. It's not pain I'm feeling, it's nostalgia." It was true though, Junsu had repeatedly been dumped before considering the fact that he fallen in love a lot so breakup was not a strange thing for him. However, this was Changmin. Junsu buried himself further in the blanket.

Jaejoong looked at Yoochun pointedly. “Chunnie, you’re not helping at all.”

Yoochun rolled his eyes and got up. “Well then, if my help was not courteously received, I’m going to make myself useful and buy us some lunch.” With that he left the apartment but not before petting Junsu’s head first. Junsu felt like a cat.

Jaejoong was kind enough to not give Junsu his usual ‘I-told-you-so’ comment. Junsu sneaked a glance at his friend. “So what do you think really happened with Changmin?” he asked in a whisper.

Jaejoong looked at his nails, "Su, It's a problem being beautiful. It's only the handsome men that ask us out because they're the only ones who think they have a chance. And handsome men are dolts. Life is unfair to us. At some point we have to face the certain reality: despite all the good the world seems to offer, true happiness can only be found in one thing - shopping."

“So you’re saying that Yunho is dolt?”

Jaejoong blushed red. “Well, he’s an exception. Oh, but if you want me to break up with him because he’s friends with Changmin, I can totally do that.”

Junsu didn’t want to tell Jaejoong that Changmin didn’t even remember Jaejoong so breaking up with Yunho was kind of mute point. Besides that was totally childish. And Jaejoong seemed genuinely happy with Yunho so even though Junsu was sad, at least he could be happy seeing Jaejoong was happy.

“No, you don’t have to do that,” he said finally. “It’s just that, I never saw this coming you know? Him breaking up with me?”

Jaejoong hugged him and Junsu tried not to think about he probably stink because he hadn’t taken a shower in three days. Jaejoong didn’t seem to mind though, "But you said it yourself Junsu, it’s nostalgia.

Junsu's eyes glistened, "The wrong ones don't hurt Hyung; the right ones do."

As Jaejoong continued to hug him, Junsu cried again. He wanted to scream at Changmin but if he looked at the man now he’d just ended up crying again. And as he thought about Changmin, the butterfly in his stomach had deformed back to its caterpillar form.
