Half of the Moon
Chapter Six
By: Sharl/zielddhy
Changmin cursed as he threw a jacket with more force than necessary. Idiot Alpha, why did he have to dip his hands into everything? Changmin was perfectly fine with living in considerable distance with Junsu, never having any contact with the man. It had gone so well, especially since Junsu seemed to be avoiding him as well. But no, Yunho just had to do the very thing Changmin had avoided: spending time with Junsu alone.
It wasn’t that Changmin didn’t understand what the consequences were to the pack’s bond. His awkward stagnant state with Junsu had given the whole pack an uncomfortable feeling, particularly since no one dared to reprimand him because he’s the Second. Neither Yunho nor Jaejoong said anything and so Changmin thought it wasn’t going to be a problem. Apparently it was. He cursed at the Alpha one more time before throwing a pack of toiletries.
“Yunho can hear you, you know.”
He turned around to see Siwon standing in the doorway, leaning casually against the frame with a small smile on his handsome face. Changmin sighed and turned back to pack his things. “I know he can,” he replied, “Everybody in the house can.”
“True,” Siwon said absentmindedly. He didn’t say anything else, merely watching Changmin pack necessary things and put one last pair of jeans before finally zipping the bag closed. The Second looked pissed as hell on the surface, but Siwon had spent nearly four decades living with the man in the same house. He could see the slightest hint of nervousness in the other; the way he could not keep still even before packing his things, the way his eyes keep looking everywhere never focusing on anything.
He stepped forward, getting closer to Changmin and placed a hand on his shoulder to calm him down. “Breathe. It’s not good for your health.”
Changmin snorted. “What are you, a doctor now?”
“No, but you know that I took a trip to study yoga in India.”
The Second couldn’t help but smile. He remembered that trip, where Siwon was away for almost six months to study yoga because it intrigued him. Siwon was always an enigma, he was a gentle soul, a contradiction compared to his werewolf’s violent nature and he always had the most fascinating ideas. One of them was to integrate calming and relaxation techniques of yoga in order to gain better control of his wolf especially during full moons.
It was unsuccessful of course; nothing except silver cages could contain a werewolf during the full moon. When he was asked why the hell he did that, Siwon merely answered with a shrug, saying that he wouldn’t know it was a failure until he had tried it himself. But now he knew that so at least it was a good experiment. Experiment. If Yunho wasn’t such an understanding Alpha, he would’ve kicked Siwon out of the pack already.
“You’ll be alright, Min.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Changmin looked away, not wanting to argue with the other wolf.
“You’re lucky that you’ve found a mate. There are some of us who would kill for that, you know.” Siwon spoke softly, and although his eyes showed nothing, there was a hint of bitterness in his voice.
Changmin’s gaze softened. Siwon was older than him and he had been looking for a mate for decades now, even before Changmin met him. Before joining Yunho’s pack, he had travelled the world to no avail. Finally he decided to settle down, realizing that perhaps he would have a better chance if he stayed in one place and let his mate find him instead. The Second moved closer and hugged Siwon tightly. “You’ll find him one day, I promise. Don’t lose hope.” He tried to give comfort through the pack’s bond to Siwon, making him smiled gratefully at Changmin.
“Come on,” he finally said, “Yunho is waiting downstairs. I’m supposed to drive you two there.”

The journey was awkward to say the least. Neither of them spoke. Siwon chatted with Changmin at the beginning, unfortunately since the drive took a good three hours, he finally turned on the radio, relying on it to fill the uncomfortable silence in the car. Some pop music was on and then the news. Changmin tried to listen because he might need it later on to develop his business further, but currently he was failing. The reason for that was sitting in the backseat at the moment.
Junsu spoke very little through the whole ride, only answering questions with monosyllables when asked. He then settled to look outside, as if there was something very interesting amidst the trees. By the time Changmin dared sneaking a glance towards the other, Junsu was already fast asleep. He took one second too long looking at Junsu and had to ignore Siwon’s small knowing smile.
They bought sandwiches to eat on the way to save time, but it was already dark when they finally arrived. Siwon helped to take the luggage out of the car and it was then that Changmin realized this was really happening. He was going to spend four days with his submissive mate. A tendril of nervousness slithered in his mind and he clamped it down quickly.
The cabin wasn’t huge, but there was plenty of space to put their luggage on. A quick tour revealed a decent-sized kitchen with a small dining room adjoined to it, one living room complete with fireplace and heaters inside, and one bathroom. The backdoor lead to what Changmin suspected as wood storage and room for generator. There was a front porch with reclining seats, but he doubted any of them would use it. However there was only one bedroom in the cabin and when he opened the door, Changmin frowned, seeing that there was only one bed.
Junsu seemed to understand what went through The Second’s mind and he quickly said. “You take the bed, I’ll sleep, umm, somewhere else.”
Changmin cleared his throat. “No, we should… share the bed.”
The submissive tried to protest. “No no, I’m fine, I can sleep perfectly comfortable on the floor, and there’s no silver in it anyway.”
Changmin’s grip on the mug he had been holding tightened and before he knew what was happening, the mug was in pieces and his hand was bloodied. Junsu looked shocked. Neither of them moved for a moment until Siwon appeared. “Tsk, not even five minutes here and you’re already injured Min?” He took out a first aid kit and gestured at Changmin to sit down. Junsu was still rooted to the ground, watching the exchange with wide eyes and finally Siwon asked him to sweep the broken pieces before anyone stepped on it.
As he cleaned The Second’s palm with alcohol, Siwon whispered in low voice, “You’re scaring him, you know that right?” When Changmin didn’t answer him, he continued, “Scaring him like that won’t accomplish anything, you have to make sure he-“
“Damn it Siwon, I fucking know that alright?!” Changmin very nearly shouted. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, “The casual way he talked about no silver on the floor scared me shitless. How can he talk about it like, like he’s used to it?”
Siwon tied up the bandage. “I don’t know what’s happened to him, Min. Yunho only told us that he has bad experiences and that we should treat him carefully.” He looked straight to Changmin’s mismatched eyes, “But I do know this: you’re feeling protective towards him already. That’s what makes you mad.”

That night, Changmin watched Junsu’s back as the other slept. His own sleep didn’t come until dawn arrived.
+
Changmin’s wolf was unhappy.
It had been two days since they had arrived and so far nothing had changed. Junsu kept on avoiding him all the time just like before, a remarkable feat considering they lived in a one bedroom cabin. He would leave the cabin before Changmin woke up, leaving cooked food for breakfast and lunch. He’d be back by dinner time and they both would have an awkward silent dinner. After a shower Junsu would curl up on his side of the bed and sleep. Or pretended to sleep, Changmin didn’t know.
On the third morning Changmin succeeded in waking up earlier than usual. He stumbled out of the bedroom and entered the small dining room. Like always, there was rice and fish with eggs on the table, and sandwiches for lunch but Junsu was nowhere to be found.
Changmin moped around the cabin, cleaning whatever needed to be cleaned and even made sure the generator had enough fuel in it, but it was all done before noon. He sighed, uncomfortable with nothing to do. Where the hell was Junsu anyway? They were supposed to talk damn it, not avoiding each other like a plague.
Like you didn’t avoid him in the first place.
Not helping, Hedwig, not helping at all.
Changmin could easily imagine Hedwig was lounging at the large plateau lazily, inspecting his nails and cleaning his fur, that bastard. Sometimes he regretted naming his Wolf Hedwig, but the pure white fur made it appropriate to call him that.
The thunder outside brought him back to reality. Shit, why hadn’t he noticed it before? It was raining heavily now, and Junsu was still outside. He was pretty sure the submissive didn’t bring any umbrella, wherever the hell he goes to. Changmin finally had enough. He’ll find Junsu and drag his sorry ass in here and they’d talk. Growling a bit, he put on a jacket and prepared to run through the heavy rain only to stop when he set foot on the front porch.
Junsu was there, in his wolf form. He was curling at the corner, his wet body shivering visibly despite the thick brown fur he had. His eyes were feverish. Junsu lifted his head when Changmin opened the door and from the way his body froze, The Second’s appearance startled him and he was still fucking terrified. He then stood up on shaky paws, and although it was clear that he was not at all well, one second later he took off, jumping over the railing.
“Shit,” Changmin cursed under his breath before he gave chase. “Junsu, you stupid stubborn submissive.”
+
Through some impressive persuasion power he didn’t know he had and a lot of struggle later, somehow Changmin managed to bring Junsu back to the cabin and even convinced him to change back into his human form. Junsu stumbled into the bedroom fully clothed and literally collapsed onto the bed.
Changmin went to the kitchen to make a porridge or cream soup that was easy to swallow. There was no medicine in the cabin and he mentally cursed at Yunho again for not leaving any in the car. They were stuck there until someone picked them up tomorrow. However if Junsu’s fever was still running high, Changmin had to contact his Alpha immediately.
Yet the thought of leaving this place, ending the short time he had with Junsu made his heart ache. Call him selfish, but he didn’t want to leave this place yet. He still hadn’t talked with Junsu and in a sense, they hadn’t really accomplished anything.
He brought the porridge over to the bedroom, only to find Junsu was tossing and turning on the bed, his eyes closed. Changmin took a piece of damp, cold towel and put it on the other’s forehead. Junsu flinched a bit when the cool cloth touched his skin, but fortunately the tossing decreased a little. He tried to wake him up. Junsu merely whimpered and his body was shaking badly, making Changmin wonder what kind of dream Junsu was having right now. Hedwig whined, obviously troubled by the fact that their mate was sick.
It might be a good idea to delve into their barely-there-bond. If Junsu was having a nightmare, it’d be better to have him awake. Besides he needed to eat anyway, after that he could always go back to sleep. Changmin dropped down his block on their bond and pushed on it.
But Junsu was also blocking him from the other side.
Frustrated, he pushed a bit further, cursing when he found that Junsu’s block was not budging despite his feverish state. Fuck, why hadn’t Changmin realized this before, that Junsu was blocking, hiding something because he didn’t want anyone to see?
When have you ever tried to reach out for him?
Suddenly, Junsu’s voice brought him back to reality. “What are you doing?”
Junsu’s eyes were golden, and it meant that he was almost losing control of his wolf. Before Changmin could say anything, Junsu spoke again. “Why are you pushing at the block? What do you want? Leave us be.”
Changmin bristled at the plurals, realizing that he was now speaking to the Wolf inside Junsu. Hedwig was surprisingly calm considering that he finally met his counterpart, but Changmin decided not to dwell on that. “Why are you here? Where is Junsu?”
“Why do you care? You rejected him. You hurt him. You hurt us.”
That was like a slap on his face. He knew that he was wrong, he shouldn’t have rejected Junsu, he shouldn’t have hurt him. He had done what was unforgiveable. One’s mate was supposed to be the most precious thing in the world, to be treasured, to be guarded, and look at what he had done. Junsu was now blocking everything and everyone, not letting anyone close, not even Changmin. In fact, even his own Wolf supported him in that decision.
But Changmin didn’t know what to do back then. The fact of having a submissive mate was too sudden, too humiliating until his own pride and stubbornness acted like a reflex and made him reject Junsu. Suddenly the feeling to apologize, to make things right again between them overwhelmed him. And it was that exact feeling that made him able to gain control back on his emotions and said, “You have to give him back, he needs to wake up.”
“No.”
“Are you defying your dominant mate?”
“Oh so now you’re our mate huh?”
Changmin closed his eyes, calling on all the willpower in his body not to snap at the sick man. He instead focused on that feeling again, the one that made his heart painfully hollow because his mate was not there. There were tears in his eyes when he opened them. “Junsu, please. You have to wake up,” he whispered. He placed a kiss on the other’s forehead, the first of the many that would follow if Junsu let him, and said again, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, please come back to me.”
Junsu’s body jerked once, his eyes began to close and his whole face began to relax. Only then Changmin dared to breathe again.
He then reached for his phone. “Yunho,” he said the moment the other line picked up, “Four days are not enough, I need more time.” He sneaked a glance at the sleeping figure on the bed, took one look at the flushed face and his grip on the phone tightened. “I’m not letting him go.”
Outside the window, the rain stopped.
