Half of the Moon
Chapter Four
By: Sharl/zielddhy

He didn’t know how long he had cried. In his mind, everything was numb, he couldn’t think, he couldn’t move. There was only one thing he knew for certain: he didn’t want to live anymore because why should he when his mate didn’t want him? When the only person that could make everything right again was so disgusted by his presence? The urge to kill himself was much stronger than when he was in his old pack, the pain was just too much.

Sometime through blurry tears, Junsu recognized his Alpha’s touch. Loving words were whispered to his ear, but they did little to calm him down. The pack bond was a mess. He could feel everyone’s confusion, Yoohwan’s concern, Yunho’s and Jaejoong’s anger, and of course: Changmin’s disgust.

The fact that the Second didn’t even bother trying to hide his feelings from the pack bond spoke volumes about how Changmin regarded the whole situation.

He didn’t blame his mate though, in fact he understood him very much. Junsu was a submissive, the opposite of Changmin’s dominance and once they mated - if they mated, which was very unlikely and bordering impossible - their dominance would combined. Changmin’s position as a Second might get jeopardized, unless he was ridiculously dominant. And it was every dominant’s worst nightmare: to have their ranks demoted.

Moreover Junsu was the worst submissive in the world. He was emotionally unstable and skittish and a pathetic mess. He was supposed to give out comfort and took care of the pack’s members when they were feeling down but look at him. Since he had joined Yunho’s pack a month ago, he was always the one being given comfort. Junsu was still somewhat amazed that Yunho hadn’t kicked him out yet. So when Changmin refused to accept him as his mate, it was very understandable.

Even Junsu didn’t like himself, why should anyone want him?

+

The next thing Junsu knew, he was in his bed and it was Leeteuk who looked at him in concern. If Leeteuk was here, Kangin the Marrock must have arrived as well. Then the situation was worse than Junsu had expected. But then again, this would be the very first time a dominant had a mate that was submissive. Leeteuk’s presence calmed him down somehow, maybe it was because he was the one who saved Junsu back then and maybe… maybe… maybe he’d do the same thing again now. “C-can I go back to your pack?”

Leeteuk looked at him sadly and Junsu knew the answer even before the older male spoke. “Are you alright? Can I get you anything?”

My mate. I want him. But of course it was impossible, so Junsu shook his head. Tears started to gather again and he curled in further, wanting to sleep so that perhaps when he woke up this was all just a dream - a horrible, horrible nightmare.

+

When Junsu was awake, Yoohwan was beside him instead of Leeteuk.

He had a cup of tea with him and as Junsu sipped on it he felt a little bit better. Among the pack members, Yoohwan was the one whom Junsu was closest with. His quiet nature didn’t scare Junsu like the others did sometimes, and the fact that he was in a relationship with his own brother made him stand out in a way.

“We’re going to have an early hunt tomorrow. Jaejoong said it might take off the pack’s aggression.”

Shoot. He had almost forgotten about the hunt, his very first hunt as a pack member. He was looking forward to it initially, especially since Yoohwan had mentioned how exciting the hunt would be, but his sudden encounter with Changmin put things in a different light. Suddenly the thought of spending the night in a silver cage during the full moon was much more appealing than spending it with The Second’s disgust and contempt towards him.

“Do you know where Yunho keeps a silver cage?”

Yoohwan’s eyes flared dangerously, making Junsu flinch before he looked apologetic and became normal again. “Junsu, don’t tell me-“

“Please. I-I can’t be near him, not now when he’s so-“ Junsu closed his eyes to prevent more tears. Not that he had any left. “He hates me. Please. I need it.”

“You can’t, he doesn’t have one.”

Junsu shook harder. “You don’t understand Yoohwan, I don’t-I can’t… The pain is too much. If I don’t get the silver cage, I don’t know how to-.” He didn’t need to say it because he knew Yoohwan would understand. If he saw Changmin again without the silver cage he might run, preferably somewhere away from the pack and kill himself. The cage provided an alternative pain and the silver would make him numb, hopefully until he didn’t have suicidal urge anymore.

The door opened and Junsu saw Yoochun come in. Yoohwan must have told Yoochun through their bond and asked him for help. Junsu thought it was really amazing that Yoochun could still take care of him despite having to hold the pack. He sat next to his brother and hugged him close, looking at Junsu with determination. “Changmin is an idiot.”

“He’s not,” Junsu snapped almost immediately. Only a second later he realized that this was the freaking Third whom he had just talked back to and gulped. “Sorry,” he said again, “I didn’t mean that.” The urge to defend Changmin was still in his Wolf and he didn’t like it if someone talked bad about him, even if it was Yoochun or even Yunho.

Thankfully Yoochun didn’t look particularly offended. “It’s okay. It’ll be okay,” Yoochun said and Junsu knew he wasn’t talking about his previous defiance, “Don’t worry, Yunho and Kangin are talking to him right now. They’ll knock some sense into him.”

Hearing that from a dominant wolf made things seem better. However Junsu was still unconvinced. “This never happened before.” No dominant ever has mated with a submissive and it was probably the reason why Kangin and Leeteuk were here.

Yoochun didn’t bother to hide the fact. “No it hasn’t. But there’s always the first time for everything. It’ll be okay, I promise.”

+

When Yoochun said that Yunho and Kangin were talking to Changmin, Junsu imagined just that. The three of them, sitting comfortably on the sofa and maybe having a drink or two, talking among themselves and well, talking. But what he saw was the opposite.

Changmin was sprawled on his back, Yunho snarling above him. The Second had bruise on his cheek and blood dripped from the cut on his lips. His eyes were golden as they stared angrily at Yunho in defiance. Jaejoong was behind Yunho, keeping one hand on the Alpha’s back and Junsu knew it was the only thing that kept Yunho in control of his own Wolf. He now understood why Jaejoong hadn’t visited him; he needed to keep Yunho’s sanity, literally. Kangin who looked just as pissed was standing a few feet away, speaking quietly with Leeteuk who seemed to be concerned rather than anything else.

“If you still want to be in my pack, you have to submit to me. Both of you.” Yunho growled. Changmin flinched at the plural, knowing it meant both him and his Wolf.

Junsu unconsciously took a step back. The aggression in the room reminded him too much of his old
pack and right now Yunho looked exactly like his old Alpha. He let out a whimper and everyone’s eyes immediately looked at him.

Kangin was the one who snapped out of his anger at once. “Junsu,” his gaze softened considerably. Something passed between the Marrock and his mate and Leeteuk was suddenly in front of Junsu, shielding him from Changmin who looked incredibly disgusted at the sight of the submissive.

Junsu felt like running away from the house, preferably to somewhere that had a lake or river and drown himself. The little comfort he got when speaking with Yoochun and Yoohwan earlier had vanished on the spot. The realization came back tenfold: his mate didn’t want him. His mate was disgusted by him. Wolf was keening somewhere inside him and tried to give comfort to Junsu but he was too far gone. The sight that is his Alpha right now looked very much like his old Alpha also made things worse.

Someone hugged him and gave him comfort, whispering loving words and promises that everything would be just fine. Junsu’s initial reaction to Yunho’s touch was to violently jerk away, but then he recognized the same feeling just like when he first met Yunho and he calmed down.

“I’m sorry I scared you,” Yunho whispered, “I apologize.”

Junsu buried his head on his Alpha’s chest, body still trembling with fear because although Yunho had now reverted back it didn’t change the fact that Changmin still didn’t want him. The Second was now kneeling, head bowed but Junsu could see his fists clench tightly, as if he was taking all of his strength not to lash out and keep his Wolf in check.

Kangin was standing in front of Changmin’s kneeling form, his expression unreadable. It looked like he wanted to be angry at Changmin, but on the other hand he could also understand why he did it. Finally the Marrock said, “Tomorrow is the full moon and all of you need to hunt. Focus on that first, the rest can wait.” With that, he left with his mate. Leeteuk shot Junsu one last concerned look and had a brief word with Yoochun and Yoohwan who both stood at the front door.

Junsu spent the night in the brothers’ room. Yoochun hardly slept and Junsu knew why: to make sure the submissive wasn’t going to drown himself.

+

Like any other full moon nights, he was forced to change into his Wolf form. But this would be the very first time he was allowed to be outside the silver cage to change. That one time in Kangin’s pack didn’t count because he was still too weak to change back then.

Junsu wondered earlier whether to ask Yunho for the silver cage, however one warning look from Yoohwan shut him up.

The pack knew it was time for the hunt when they heard Yunho who was still in human form begin to howl. One by one the pack members changed and howled back. The change was uncomfortable even bordering on painful for some but the Alpha’s encouragement helped. Yunho and Jaejoong stood by the members who had trouble and that included Junsu. He was the last one to change, mainly because he wasn’t used to this, and the fact that he had to endure Changmin’s loathing gaze made everything twice as worse.

He stood up shakily on his paws, whimpering as he did so but Jaejoong licked his ear and suddenly Junsu felt a bit better. He took the time to look at the pack members one by one, guessing easily which one was who.

Yunho was magnificent. His wolf form was really tall and his grey fur shone under the moonlight. Jaejoong trotted to where Yunho was and licked his mouth, rippling his own grey fur as he shook it a bit. Yoochun and Yoohwan stood together, their wolves were almost identical and anyone could see that they were brothers. Siwon’s fur was black and he was big, but his eyes were full with mirth as he played with Minho and they rolled together on the ground. Donghae and Eunhyuk were clearly impatient to begin the hunt, they both whimpered at Yunho, asking for permission to scout ahead for any probable preys.

And lastly there was Changmin, whom Yunho guarded with watchful eyes. Junsu was amazed by how beautiful Changmin looked. He was tall and lean, his fur was pure white and although it wasn’t as shiny as Yunho’s fur, Junsu knew it would be just as soft or maybe even more. Junsu felt ashamed when he looked at his own plain, brown fur. It was highly mediocre compared to Changmin’s beautiful fur; no wonder The Second hadn’t looked at him even once since he had changed.

Yunho howled again and gave his permission to Donghae and Eunhyuk. The mated pair immediately took off, sensitive noses sniffing the air and the ground, looking for preys’ scents and trails. The others followed soon in a slower pace, knowing that they needed to conserve energy to hunt their prey later.

Junsu was given the strategy’s overview earlier by Yoochun, about the pack’s usual formation to hunt. Donghae and Eunhyuk who had scouted ahead would tell the pack where the preys were located. Usually it was either a caribou or a deer, but sometimes they caught gazelle and even bison too. The pack relied heavily on timing and teamwork, each wolf must know exactly what his role was or otherwise the hunt would fail. Because Junsu was new to the pack, he wasn’t given any role, his job was to observe carefully how the pack hunted and memorize it until he can participate in the next hunt. Not all hunts were successful, Yoochun told him, but it was good training for them to function as a pack.

From somewhere ahead, Donghae echoed in the pack bonds that there were some caribous in the north. Together they ran at full speed until they were greeted by Eunhyuk’s waiting form. Yunho sniffed the air and he caught the caribous’ scent. With one look at Changmin, the Second took off, Yoochun, Siwon and Minho trailed behind him. They were to act as the hidden flank, the ones who waited and ambushed the prey in surprise.

Few moments later, Yunho began to run and the hunt began. He ran in the general direction towards the caribou’s herd, as Jaejoong trailed behind him and Donghae showed up somewhere ahead and joined his Alpha immediately. The rest of them split up, peeled off to take separate positions around their targets.

Yunho’s appearance spread panic to the herd. Jaejoong had taken the left side to prevent the preys from escaping and Donghae did the same in his position, the herd had no choice but to move to the right. And then Yoohwan appeared, surprising them even more, they moved southeast. The herd broke up, and now it was easier to target individuals. Yunho chose which one would be their dinner tonight and his choice fell onto one female caribou. Together the four of them closed in on it. Eunhyuk then appeared, making it even more confused and it ran further southeast, to where exactly the hidden flanks waited.

The Alpha outran them and he drove the female caribou away, making sure it ran directly towards the hidden flanks. Sure enough, right then Minho appeared and tried to kill it, but he missed. Siwon ambushed it but once again the caribou got lucky. It even started to run in different direction as if it saw a better chance to escape. However, Yunho seemed to have anticipated this as he cut the corner and joined Yoochun and Changmin for the final assault.

The caribou’s sudden move broke up the pack’s strategy and now the three most dominants had to chase after it. Suddenly Changmin turned left and ran through a hidden path. Yoochun and Yunho kept chasing after their prey, making sure it kept running until Changmin was in position. The Second appeared again moments later, effectively cutting the caribou’s path. He nearly missed as well, however he managed to get his teeth in its leg. It wasn’t a killing bite, but it was enough to bring it down. Yoochun and Yunho caught up immediately. Together they killed the caribou.

The rest of the pack joined and just like what Yoohwan had told Junsu, Changmin got the first bite. It was very appropriate. Not only was Changmin Second, he was also the one who brought the prey down, and that definitely deserved first bite as a treat.

Changmin tore off a leg and brought it to a corner where he ate quietly. Normally a wolf would eat his share with his mate, and even ripped off few pieces for extra treat, but Changmin ate alone. Not that Junsu expected him to share but maybe it was too much hoping that Changmin might at least acknowledge him. As the pack tore into the carcass, Junsu stood behind, knowing that his position as a submissive on his first hunt would not guarantee any meat left for him.

Yoochun suddenly appeared and dropped a piece of meat in front of Junsu. He nudged the submissive forward, signaling him to begin eating but Junsu was hesitant. Somehow it wasn’t appropriate to eat and the fact that Changmin killed the prey made Junsu even more reluctant. Yunho, who had been sitting in one corner watching his pack eat, gave him a pointed look and Junsu relented.

He began to eat, fully aware of Changmin’s burning - loathing - gaze directed at him. He bit down a whimper that threatened to escape, sure that this pain would continue unless he died. Hopefully the day would come soon.
