In a minor bright-spot to my morning, my mistreated trackball, having dried out, appears to be working again; although the lower-left button (which I use for Select) seems a bit sticky and I might wish to investigate that with a careful screwdriver later.

I think it's going to be one of those days - I've spilt Coke on my nice Kensington Expert Mouse Pro, and whilst I've followed the appropriate procedure (drain, rinse, leave in warm place) my experience is that many pieces of hardware fail to survive this... :(
