Potpourri o' Life

A woman was murdered in our apartment building last night; according to reports in yesterday's media, she was decapitated by her husband. I didn't know the family by name, but now I am running through the mental images of everyone I've ever seen push the PH button in the elevator and wondering if it was them. Creepy ( Read more... )

Mrs. Clubber and I were corresponding about yesterday's tragedy. I was (and still am) thoroughly creeped out, although she was quite stoic. And she's right, it wasn't a random act of violence, it was a domestic dispute. But it still creeps me the hell out. Like, oh my god, there's a dead person upstairs..a murdered person and a murderer. *shudder* When things like this happen, I find it hard to be rational about it. To me,, it feels like once that line has been crossed into violence, all bets are off. It's just as likely (in my mind) that the violence escalates and randomizes. Scares me a lot, it does.

Too bad about the umbrella woman. If you stayed quiet, you would have solved both umbrella problems. But been less nice.

Angela at work was freaking out about the murder as well, and asking me wildly inappropriate questions about the nationality of the people involved. She also went on to opine "I guess you live in a high-crime neighbourhood, huh".

No. We live in a building of of 15 stories with 27 apartments per story. Of those 405 families living there, some will be less than savoury. In this case, a domestic dispute blew up way big, and someone killed someone else (although I cannot imagine just how enraged I would have to be to decide "Okay, your head has to come off"). I expect some people in those 405 families are thieves, and some are liars. Most won't be. This is the viewpoint of myself and mrs_clubber, which is why we're not going to pack up and move because someone got killed. It's not like a bunch of murderers are going to decide "Oh, so THAT'S where we should be living" and move on in.

I know that you're absolutely right. It's isolated and our neighbourhood is one of the safest in Etobicoke. Still creeps me the hell out though. A part of me (I'm thinking it's the "mom" part), wants to flee to a "safe" place at once. If I could figure out where that might be, I would go there.

That's where the rational brain (such as it is) catches up.
