Vacation Reading
I finally got around to reading Chicago in Maps: 1612 to 2002. I read non-fiction at work during lunch, but this book doesn't fit in my lunch bag, so I skipped over it for a while. As far as I'm concerned, the author could've waited 10 years and made it cover an even 4 centuries ( Read more... ) -

Philip Seymour Hoffman was the sort-of celebrity crush of my former almost-girlfriend. I'm sure she's disturbed by his death, and the nature of his death, and I would like to offer my condolences to her. I've never seen any of his work, but it seems he was a good person and well respected.

Sci-Fi Technobabble Generator
This is a gross alteration of the Star Trek Technobabble Generator from The Nitpicker's Guide for Next Generation Trekkies Trekkers, Volume II. I came up with it fairly soon after reading the book in 1995, and recently rediscovered it while looking up the episode "The Chase", because of a discussion about it on a blog.
