She curled against the door, Shell in her arms. It had been strange, really -- she never expected something like this to happen. This itching feeling in the back of her not-heart like she was supposed to be doing something or being somewhere. But she was just here, and it wasn't going away.

There was a gradual lessening, though -- slow, like ice melting, but it was going away. Not bothering her so much anymore, but... it didn't make any sense. She knew she wasn't anything to him. She wasn't anything to anybody, really, so why was it like -- she needed to be?

And how could a Nobody have needs anyway?

Aside from biological things, food and drink and sleep, she wasn't supposed to feel at all. And suddenly she missed Castle Oblivion, the first days, when she just drew and didn't know anything else. But then, at the same time -- it was better to have this feeling, this little voice in her skull screaming for something, than to have nothing at all ( ... )

Byakuya didn't know. He didn't know why everything else seemed less important, why he had come to the conclusion Hisana would understand if he did not make it today to celebrate her life beneath the sakura tree, or why he had even felt something when it was Namine who opened the door. He blindly followed orders, willingly did many things he'd been asked out of duty. Perhaps this was just one more he'd added and he hadn't taken the time to accept it yet.

He stepped past her without a word, holding out a sack of some vegetables for her rabbit and bananas, which he had taken special care to make certain they were undamaged, for her to take. "You expected anything less?" He would probably be insulted at that point, if he actually cared. Namine had very little in the way of expectations and he'd known for quite some time how to deal with that little issue.

She didn't understand, really. It wasn't her place to, it seemed. Byakuya was secretive -- this she understood, and she wasn't going to pry. She just knew she had to be there -- because if she wasn't, who else would be? But unlike him, she had no duties, no jobs or orders to fulfill. She just was, that was all.

She took it with only slight hesitation, setting it gently on the table. "Thank you. No, I suppose not." Was it insulting to have no expectations? What she expected was to be ignored, that was all, but the knit of his brows didn't seem so tight. He seemed at ease, really. Was that because of her, she wondered? "You... aren't leaving now, are you?" It was weird -- she'd seen his retreating back so many times, but this time it was like -- like he wasn't supposed to. Like he was supposed to stay here with her. How selfish.

He wanted to say yes. It was almost a compulsion to avoid these people. When a method was discovered to leave this place, he'd never see any of them again. To form loyalties with any one of them was asking for more trouble than any of them were worth. He'd purposely distanced himself from them, ignored their troubles. It was how it was supposed to be, how shinigami were meant to live. The lives in the world outside their own were strictly duties they had to fulfill ( ... )

But he didn't understand, did he? Forming loyalties meant you had allies. Trouble wasn't another word for 'friends'. Meant to live...? But she could say that about Nobodies, too, and here she was, attempting to be friends with him. She didn't think it was all bad, honestly.

No, she wasn't that woman and couldn't ever be. Honestly, though, she didn't really expect to be, either. She was fine with being who she was, picking up the shards, fitting them back carefully together. He wasn't supposed to think of her as a replacement for what he'd lost.

The smile came out before she could stop it, her cheeks pinkening a little. "I'm glad, then. Um, I --" She paused then. Why had she asked? Because that feeling wanted her to? "I... guess I thought we could do something," Namine mumbled after a moment, withdrawing a bit of lettuce from within the bag he'd given her and crouching to offer it to Shell.

Friends. Allies. Companions. Was this the only thing that mattered to these people? He'd seen it over the months he'd been here. People spoke, they befriended. They even formed little groups and associated and he had not been spared the attempts to include him on such things. What use was any of it? He didn't need to be their friends to defend them.

He would never imagine replacing her. Did she think he would ever allow that thought to cross his mind? He despised the mere thought of allowing someone to take her place. But there were just some things that kicked in, some things that stuck out in his mind the more and more he had seen her. Things he remembered as he cared for her. It had been one of the reasons he stopped that day, the day that they had met ( ... )
