He wanted to say yes. It was almost a compulsion to avoid these people. When a method was discovered to leave this place, he'd never see any of them again. To form loyalties with any one of them was asking for more trouble than any of them were worth. He'd purposely distanced himself from them, ignored their troubles. It was how it was supposed to be, how shinigami were meant to live. The lives in the world outside their own were strictly duties they had to fulfill.

How badly he wanted to ignore that trembling voice that said it was okay to be around someone else, someone so fragile, so sweet, so kind. He hated how it tried to convince him that it was all right because she wasn't Hisana and that having someone to talk to wasn't so bad.

"No," he answered instead. Because he couldn't bring himself to turn and walk away, as he always had. He'd probably admonish himself later for such a show of hesitation, at least internally, but for now, the word had already fallen from his lips. There was no taking it back. "I have time to spare.
