[A high-pitched buzzing can be heard on the Forge today, though it only lasts for a second or two. It seems the person causing the buzzing realized he ought to make it stop, and so he does.]

- Oh! Did that do it? Testing, testing!

[The person on the other end lets out a loud, "Ha!" of triumph, and when he speaks again he's unmistakably cheerful ( Read more... )

... You tried dropping the thing? Why would you do something like that?

Oh, I didn't try dropping the thing. It sort of just happened to fall at the exact moment I hadn't been paying attention to it.

Oh! That makes a lot more sense.

I should hope so. I'm not so irresponsible as to purposely drop the thing immediately after finding it, I should hope.

Where this is is Anatole, but when it is could be anyone's guess. Everyone was going somewhere and now we're all going nowhere rather quickly. Shame about your date, though.

Ah, well, a date is a date. I'd been trying to think of the best way of letting her down easy, to tell you the truth. I suppose vanishing on her will have to do in a pinch -- mostly since I haven't really got another choice at the moment.

. . . But, right! Anatole. That's a new one on me -- and that's saying something. I take it that you're not a local yourself, then?

She's not the violent type, is she? Sometimes they get so angry when you just skip out on things. Once you explain the city and the whole 'mist might try to eat my face' thing, you might have better chances.

It's new for all of us too, actually. I'm not, and anyone you happen to talk to with your handy primitive Forge isn't either.

Oh, well, she can be a bit ruthless, but usually she's fair. I remember once she sent armed men after me! Ah, the memories.

-- Sorry, Forge? Is that what this thing is, then? I was content to call it a mobile.

voice. you did not see that. mnemotechnics December 9 2009, 01:57:58 UTC
Wherever you're from, pal, it's more likely than not you can forget about your date with the queen. It's called Anatole, though fuck if I know exactly where and when it is, but it isn't any city of mine.

-- But if you're like the rest of us, you kind of fell in through a door. So what's this transport you're talking about?

Ah, well. She'll bounce back from the disappointment, I think.

But, right! Transport would be my ship. Had a sort of malfunction, ended up bringing me here. Afraid I haven't got the foggiest what door you mean, honestly.

Doctor, hm? Pretty interesting name.

Ah, well, it's not a name so much as it is a title functioning as a name, if you take my meaning.

-- But, well, calling a name works, just as well.

If someone addresses you directly, do they need to use the "The"?

Oh, no, not at all! Not unless that someone is particularly fond of particles. In times of duress, however, just shouting "Doctor" will be enough to catch my attention.

I doubt you'll be able to attend this date, as we all seem to be stuck here. Plucked from our different worlds by some unknown force and they do not seem to be accommodating for any missed plans or events.

. . . I see. Well, that certainly is troublesome.

Taken for what purpose, do you know?

Just arrived; if I had known such information, I would have deployed my right of diplomacy and I would have arranged a nice meeting with the people who snatched me out of a war.

So! Unknown captors, unknown purpose. This seems to be shaping up to be a perfectly lovely experience. Might I ask, is there anything that actually is known?
