[The person on the other end lets out a loud, "Ha!" of triumph, and when he speaks again he's unmistakably cheerful

Oh, I didn't try dropping the thing. It sort of just happened to fall at the exact moment I hadn't been paying attention to it.

I should hope so. I'm not so irresponsible as to purposely drop the thing immediately after finding it, I should hope.

Where this is is Anatole, but when it is could be anyone's guess. Everyone was going somewhere and now we're all going nowhere rather quickly. Shame about your date, though.

Ah, well, a date is a date. I'd been trying to think of the best way of letting her down easy, to tell you the truth. I suppose vanishing on her will have to do in a pinch -- mostly since I haven't really got another choice at the moment.

. . . But, right! Anatole. That's a new one on me -- and that's saying something. I take it that you're not a local yourself, then?

She's not the violent type, is she? Sometimes they get so angry when you just skip out on things. Once you explain the city and the whole 'mist might try to eat my face' thing, you might have better chances.

It's new for all of us too, actually. I'm not, and anyone you happen to talk to with your handy primitive Forge isn't either.

Oh, well, she can be a bit ruthless, but usually she's fair. I remember once she sent armed men after me! Ah, the memories.

-- Sorry, Forge? Is that what this thing is, then? I was content to call it a mobile.

But, right! Transport would be my ship. Had a sort of malfunction, ended up bringing me here. Afraid I haven't got the foggiest what door you mean, honestly.
