Suggestion for cleaning the cedar box (though it sounds like you have taken care of it): Murphy's Oil Soap. The people from whom we bought our first house, the mom was a smoker. And you could tell where her favorite places in the house to smoke were, because the woodwork (circa 1919) was tacky with the tar. It took three scrubbings, but I was finally able to get down to the smooth wood and get rid of the cigarette tar and tobacco smell.
Plus, Murphy's has a wonderful, delightfully clean scent to it.
Aw man, cigarette smoke--! I bet your arms hurt after that.
I have so little that's Actual Wood (or Actual Anything) that I've been exploring unorthodox uses of my pantry rather than buy cleaning products. So far it seems to work okay, though I think I may have to go out and buy some tung oil for my writing desk.

Baking soda is an excellent abrasive, though.
