So apparently it's a good idea to blast a bit of pressurized air through the vents in your laptop now and again.

I've been on a cleaning/improving kick again, you see.

My laptop is three years old now, more or less, and lately got hot easily.  I had written that off as age.  Yesterday, having procured some canned air, I decided to clean everything I could get to.  I took off all the keyboard keys and wiped them clean with Windex and cleared out the surface underneath (which has holes in the plastic layer between keys and circuitry from all the typing). I took the thing outside to use the canned air, being wary of unpleasant showers of dust and debris that can result.  After clearing off the keyboard, I closed the laptop, flipped it over, and aimed for the cooling vents.  POOF.  A-ha.

It runs much cooler now.

Also I bought a new jewelry box.  I'd been making do with this flat little one since -- oh -- junior high or so, and the jewelry in style right now is so big.  I'd just got some (really lovely) necklaces that were so not going to fit.  Fortunately, Pier 1 had this big, roomy box on clearance for $40.  (Jewelry boxes are expensive.)  Kind of larger than I was going for, but when you don't want to pay an arm and a leg, you take what you can get.  And it's so nice seeing all my stuff divided up neatly instead of being jumbled (and tangled) together.  And then I spent about half an hour cleaning the old one.  In case someone wants it.

Then there's the little cedar box that I got when Grammy moved into assisted living always had this gummy sort of film on it.  I'm guessing it's that grime you get when you combine household dust with an ancient gas furnace.  Anyway, Magic Eraser didn't work, vinegar didn't work, lemon juice didn't work: finally I broke out the baking soda (which could scratch the wood, but I was desparate), and scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed and finally got all of it off.  I think.  Looks lots nicer now, anyway.

So you know that specialty soda place I've been going to?  Today, the manager was manning the counter, and I mentioned my favorite root beer, Fitz's, and he said that it was his favorite too, and he's been trying to get it in, and he's to the point where he might just drive down to the restaurant/brewery and say, "Hey, guys, I've got this store..."

I'm telling you, the best shops are run by geeks.

computer woe, yay, geekiness, home furnishings, root beer
