Eww- popcorn

I'm hoping someone in this community can help me- we moved into a house with the dreaded popcorn ceilings. They are just awful! While I have dreams of being able to afford having them removed or lowering the ceiling, I am hoping that there is some shortterm solution to improving them (something DIY crafty.) Has anyone successfully disguised them ( Read more... )

It was built in the 60's and I'd guess there's a good chance of asbestos- which is why I'd love to have it professionally removed, but I can't afford that. So until that time I'm hoping to cover it up- but definitely without sanding it or doing anything that could potentially release any asbestos!

well there's a couple of ways to do it.

some friends of mine did it themselves but they wore like hazmat masks. they protected the floor and got the popcorn wet and scraped it right off. it's time consuming and if it's wet it reduces the chance of airborne asbestos.

see if you paint it or plaster over it you will just be getting it wet and moving it around. maybe a paint sprayer???

i too have put some thought into the dreaded popcorn ceiling- i hope you come up with a solution that works!!

I've heard of the water treatment, but I'm a little scared to do it myself :)
I hadn't thought about getting it wet with paint or plaster- thanks for the warning. I have considered spray painting- but I didn't know how well it would work (part of why I asked to see if anyone else attempted it!)

this sounds kinda hard but maybe covering the ceiling with fabric.

Hmm- good idea! Anything to draw the eye away from the popcorn-nastiness! It's a really big open space, so I may have to think about draping fabric.... at any rate, a very good suggestion, thanks!

It is highly recommended that you do not disturb it in any way if there's a chance it has asbestos in it. You can have it tested to be sure, but based on the date your house was built, it's almost definitely got it ( ... )

I think I'd heard that about the paint- but thanks for the reminder, I'll definitely keep that in mind.

They've got a special popcorn ceiling roller at Lowe's. No sprayer needed at all! I used it, and it was both cheap and easy.

i would get a quote on removal...since there is a high chance it contains asbestos, children, animals and you should not be around it..

Thanks- I'm sure we'll remove them as soon as we can afford it (I'm too chicken to try it myself. ) Plus we made the mistake of living in the house 6 months before this- so all of our stuff is already organized out there! ;)
Good luck doing yours!
