Eww- popcorn

I'm hoping someone in this community can help me- we moved into a house with the dreaded popcorn ceilings. They are just awful! While I have dreams of being able to afford having them removed or lowering the ceiling, I am hoping that there is some shortterm solution to improving them (something DIY crafty.) It was built in the 60's and I'd guess there's a good chance of asbestos- which is why I'd love to have it professionally removed, but I can't afford that. So until that time I'm hoping to cover it up- but definitely without sanding it or doing anything that could potentially release any asbestos!

well there's a couple of ways to do it.

some friends of mine did it themselves but they wore like hazmat masks. they protected the floor and got the popcorn wet and scraped it right off. it's time consuming and if it's wet it reduces the chance of airborne asbestos.

see if you paint it or plaster over it you will just be getting it wet and moving it around. maybe a paint sprayer???

i too have put some thought into the dreaded popcorn ceiling- i hope you come up with a solution that works!!

I've heard of the water treatment, but I'm a little scared to do it myself :)
I hadn't thought about getting it wet with paint or plaster- thanks for the warning. I have considered spray painting- but I didn't know how well it would work (part of why I asked to see if anyone else attempted it!)

I painted mine and it didn't move around at all. It stayed perfectly in place!

Did you use some type of airbrush, or paint sprayer to do it? I can't imagine a brush would get an even coat.

I used a specialty roller for popcorn ceilings that I found at Lowe's.
