Day 10 - A show you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving.
Justified
FX; 2010-Present
Season finale airs June 8th at 10 P.M. EST
I wasn't 100% sure I would like Justified not because I thought it might be badly done, but because, from what I'd heard, I wasn't sure it would be my thing. It follows Raylan Givens, a U.S. Federal Marshall with a rather, shall we say, 19th century style, after he's reassigned to, essentially, the same area in Kentucky that he grew up. The very first scene of the very first episode opens on Raylan meeting with some thug he had given 24 hours to leave town, or else he'd shoot him. Talk about an Establishing Character Moment.
It's perhaps slower-paced than I'm used to, which took a little while for me to get comfortable with, but it really is extremely well-written. Raylan is competent and complicated, with a backstory to match, the supporting characters round out the cast in exactly the right way, and, hell, even the bad guys are excellently done. Nothing is black and white; no one is easily Bad or Good. Each character has depth and their own motivations that make sense. The D.A. looking into Raylan's shootings isn't some one-dimensional bureacrat; the neonazi bank-robber turns out to be full of nuance; even his ex-wife's new husband is portrayed fully and realistically.
Basically, if you've heard about this show and weren't sure if you should give it a shot, it's my opinion that you totally should. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
