Oh, Community. I tuned in solely because I knew John Oliver would be on the show as a recurring character. Given the quality of the shows former TDS people have gone onto (Steve Carell perhaps excluded) I didn't really expect it to be good. But it is. Oh my god, it is.
Community follows the school lives of Jeff Winger, a lawyer whose undergrad degree wasn't exactly, shall we say, legitimate, and so was forced to enroll to complete one for real; Britta Perry, a high-school dropout who has since been somewhat aimless in life; Abed Nadir, a walking, talking pop-culture encyclopedia who essentially lives and breathes TV Tropes and plans to become a film director; Troy Barnes, the former football star who lost his scholarship after an injury (during a keg flip; it was intentional); Annie Edison, a girl from the same high school as Troy, who was on the fast track to success before she became addicted to Adderall and was forced to drop out to attend rehab; Shirley Bennett, a recently divorced mother of two who plans to start over; and Pierce Hawthorne, a moist towelette tycoon (yes, you read that right) who attends Greendale looking to reclaim some popularity and companionship. As the little blurb for the show says, they end up learning more about themselves then their classwork.
It's funny, it's smart, it's so meta, and moreover, it knows it and still manages to play it just right, balancing the line of "we know how clever we are" perfectly. It's never smug, always fun, and I enjoy it immensely. It's also given me a crush on Joel McHale, which is not something I ever expected to happen to me in my life. And it created an actual likable feminist character who isn't constantly portrayed as a bitter shrew. And you thought that would never happen! Also, I think there's a similar thread of humor with Arrested Development, so if you liked that, definitely check it out.
