Summary: Jensen Ackles meets Jared Padalecki on Halloween when they are little. And destiny is set forth... This is a story of the Halloweens in their lives.
Disclaimer: We do not own the boys. Alas. :( But boy, if we did... No money is made.
Author's Notes: One of our annual Halloween fics. We had so much fun writing this alternate universe and hope you enjoy it, too.
Story 1 Story 2 and 3 Story 4 and 5 Jared sat next to Brian at Chad's annual Halloween party and wondered how he always ended up there, even if this one was in a large, rented hall and featured mostly college students. He looked over the laughing crowd and felt a wave of nostalgia for Halloween's past. Adjusting his 20's gangster hat, he felt his breath stutter to a stop when he saw one Jensen Ackles, heartbreaker and bastard extraordinary, across the room.
Jensen laughed out loud at Chris' expression when he took a sip of his Coke. "You don't get any alcohol tonight, man... gotta be sober in case your kid is born." He thought it would be the best of ironies if Chris' wife gave birth on that day. Dressed in a doctor's coat and scrubs, Jensen felt comfortable and quite at home, since it was not unlike what he wore during his practicum and lab hours. He turned to look around the room and froze when he spotted Jared, looking gorgeous as ever and sitting next to another handsome guy.
Jared swallowed hard and then tipped his hat to Jensen, before resetting it on his head. He was dressed like a 20s gangster, completely with well-fitted pinstripe, white spats and machine gun.
Nodding in Jared's direction, Jensen's gaze swept over the man at his side before he waved slightly and then turned back to Chris. His mind had gone completely off track, and Jensen wondered why it hadn't occurred to him that Jared would likely be at the party. Chad had always been one of his best friends. "Lots of familiar faces here," Jensen tried to say casually, though he was sure Chris wouldn't buy it.
Chris glanced over at Jared and then looked back at Jensen. "Yeah," he said. "You gonna say hi?"
"No," Jensen said, shaking his head and then looking over at Jared. He was still looking at Jensen, but leaned in while the other guy said something into his ear. "Maybe... I don't know that I should. We haven't exactly talked the last couple of years."
"And whose fault is that?" Chris asked with a little smirk. He looked over at Jared again. "Looks like he's got his own guy now, same as you. Maybe it's time to put things behind you. You've known each other forever, man."
Jensen sighed, nodding. "I know you're right, but it's not like I ever stopped loving him, Chris." He'd never said the words out loud before and even though he felt a twinge of remorse at the thought of Jesse ever finding out, Jensen knew it was the truth. "Just couldn't be who he wanted me to be."
"Aw, geez, Jen," Chris drawled. "You could make that right in an instant, if you wanted. That boy'd take you back in a heartbeat."
"And I still can't be what he wants, Chris." Jensen smiled sadly at his best friend, knowing he was right. But for all Jensen might be proudly and even happily, dating a man in New York City, he wasn't about to bring that home to his parents. Not since he couldn't be certain they wouldn't turn their backs on him completely. "Besides, he's got someone else... probably not interested in revisiting history."
Chris sighed and then patted Jensen on the back. "I just hate to see you unhappy, man. And don't tell me you're not. I know you. I could see it the minute I laid eyes on you. I'd tell you to get over Jared, but I know better. I couldn't get over it, if my girl and I split."
Grinning at the thought, Jensen nodded. "Have to admit, man, never thought I'd see the day where you were settled and gonna have a baby."
"Hey we all have to grow up sometime," Chris said and then noticed Jared ambling up behind them. "I'll talk to you in a minute, man." He gestured in Jared's direction as subtly as possible.
Jensen froze slightly then turned with a stiff smile on his face. "Hey," he breathed quietly, caught off guard, since he'd figured Jared wouldn't want to have anything to do with him.
Jared smiled at Jensen, eyes sad and a bit distant, but not unkind. "Hey, Jensen. How you been? I didn't expect to see you here."
"Yeah, I've been okay. School's a drain, but I love what I'm doing," Jensen said, smiling softly. "I probably wouldn't have come down until Christmas, except Chris' wife's due to give birth, and I took a small break to be here with him - them." He looked up at Jared, trying not to let his misery seep out. "How've you been?"
"Doing all right," Jared said, studying Jensen's face intensely. "College is good. I'm on my way to a teaching credential, which is pretty exciting." He flashed his bright smile. "How's the Big Apple?"
Jensen smiled in unconscious reaction to Jared. "That's great, Jay. I know you've always wanted to teach like your mom." He was so proud of Jared, of everything he'd done and would do. "New York's pretty awesome. There's a lot to do with what little downtime I get, and so many chances to be a part of research on stuff I'd only have read about at other schools. I think you'd like the city."
Jared ducked his head and suppressed the urge to tell Jensen that he had hoped to find out... with him. "Guess I'll just have to imagine it, huh?"
"You could always go for a visit," Jensen said, gesturing at the guy still sitting across the room. "Take your friend with you and have some fun." He'd never offer for Jared to come to him, knowing the invitation would be refused.
Jared glanced at Brian and then turned back to Jensen. "I miss you, Jen," he said softly. "Even when I'm so mad at you, I can barely see, I miss you more."
Jensen gulped in a breath at the unexpected admission. He closed his eyes tight and blew it out, the pain of missing Jared in his eyes. "I miss you too, everyday, so much it hurts. But I'm still the same as I was two years ago when we split, Jay. Nothing's changed." Saying it hurt him now almost as much as it had when he'd told Jared that he wasn't going to come out to his family when Jared had pushed the issue after he'd started college.
Jared chuckled harshly and shook his head. "You can't hide who you are forever, Jen. One day, you'll meet someone who you love enough to not want to keep quiet about... or else you'll spend your life alone. Nobody wants to be your shameful secret forever." He dropped his head and shrugged.
"No one else can tell me how to live my life, Jared," Jensen said, voice laced with hurt and the same icy cold he'd fallen into when Jared had first hurled those words at him. "I've loved you more than anyone else in my life and will probably love you that way until I'm dead, but you can't make me do something I'm not ready to do or that I don't want to do." He stood tall, burying the hurt deep inside him again. "Go back to someone who can give you what you want, Jay, since you couldn't seem to give me the room to do the same.
Jared reared to his full height, eyes also full of hurt and anger. "Yeah. Thanks for reminding me why being with you was so impossible. Hard to believe I managed to forget." He turned and marched away a few steps, before pausing and tossing over his shoulder, "Try and be happy, Jensen."
Jensen sighed. "I wish I'd meant enough to you that you could have tried to see things my way." He shook his head, knowing that Jared would never understand. Turning away, Jensen pushed through the crowd to find Chris and get the hell out of there.
