Summary: Jensen Ackles meets Jared Padalecki on Halloween when they are little. And destiny is set forth...
Disclaimer: We do not own the boys. Alas. :( But boy, if we did... No money is made.
Author's Notes: One of our annual Halloween fics. We had so much fun writing this alternate universe and hope you enjoy it, too.
Jared Padalecki held his mother's hand tightly, as they walked down the dark streets. His yellow ears bounced with each excited step he took, as they approached their next destination, and he clutched his precious pumpkin basket to his chest. "Here, mama?" he asked, looking up at her.
"Yes, baby. Can you be a brave boy and go up to the door by yourself?" his mother asked, eyes warm as she looked down at him.
Jared nodded eagerly, not a baby anymore. "'M five, mama, I can do it!" he insisted and bolted for the door, as she released his hand. He made it half-way up the walk, when a dark figure suddenly emerged in front of him from the shadows, and he let out a squeal of fear.
"Whoa," Jensen Ackles said at the squeal, stepping back from the little Odie standing in front of him. "Hey, it's okay, I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm Batman!" he cried, sweeping out one wing and then crouching down in front of him.
Jared forced back tears and stared up at the imposing Batman for a moment and then his eyes widened with delight. "Cool!" he said and stepped up to look closer. He wanted to touch, but knew he wasn't suppose to. "Batman's awesome!"
Jensen grinned, lips stretching wide under the mask. "Yeah, he's awesome!" Jensen tilted his head to look at Jared. "See all the cool tools on his belt?" Moving his arms so that his wings were spread wide, Jensen showed off all of the stuff he and his mom had painted and glued to his belt.
Jared looked with wide eyes at the tools and pointed at one. "Can you throw the batarang?" he asked with deep reverence.
"I could, but then it might hurt someone, and Momma would make me go home early." Jensen frowned, remembering his mother's repeated warnings that he was not allowed to actually use any of his gadgets. "Did you get candy here yet?"
Jared pouted a little at not being able to see Batman's gear in action. "Nope," he said, shaking his head and making his ears and long tongue flap around. "They got good stuff?"
Jensen nodded. "Yeah, they got the little candy bars... like Butterfingers and stuff." He turned and looked back over his shoulder. "You should get some."
"Yeah," Jared said enthusiastically, little tummy growling at the idea. "I got good candy from my block. You been to Plymuth?" He pronounced the street name carefully through his missing teeth.
"Yeah, started over there," Jensen said, turning around and walking Jared back up to the porch. "Want to see what you got after... and you can see mine?"
"We can trade!" Jared said and then blinked. "I'm Jared." He stuck out his little, yellow, right paw.
Jensen stuck out his hand, wing fluttering with the movement. "I'm Jensen... and yeah, we can trade what we don't want." He led Jared up to the stairs, but stepped aside when they got there. He knew better than to go for seconds. It wasn't fair, his momma told him. "I'll wait here."
"Okay," Jared said and reached up to knock as hard as he could with his little fist. When the door opened to reveal a smiling, elderly lady, Jared held out his pumpkin and said, "Trickrtreat, please," in his best voice.
Watching from the side, Jensen heard his mom call for him. He turned and waved at her and then lifted his finger in what he'd seen her use as her 'in a moment' gesture, before turning back to his new friend. It was Jensen's first Halloween in town, and they'd only been there since the start of school, so he didn't have many friends yet. His sister, who was about Jared's age, had already fallen asleep in the backseat in the car.
Jared grinned his gap-toothed smile, as a hail of candy entered his pumpkin and then said, "Thank you!" before running back to Jensen. "She's nice!" he said and held out his pumpkin for Jensen to see.
Jensen looked down into the pumpkin and smiled. "She is nice. Wanna meet my mom?" He started back down the path, smiling down at his new, little friend.
"You can meet my mama, too!" Jared said and waved at her, where she was talking to another lady. "That your mama?" he asked, pointing quickly. It wasn't nice to point.
"Yeah, that's her." Jensen grinned and reached down to take Jared's hand, like he would for Mackenzie. "Maybe they'll let us trick-or-treat together."
"Oh," Jared said in delight and tugged his friend right up to his mama. "Mama, this is Jensen. May we trickrtreat together? May we, mama? May we?"
Mrs. Padalecki laughed softly and put a gentle hand on Jared's head. "Take a breath, baby. We have to ask Jensen and his mother, too." She held out a hand to Jensen. "Hello, Jensen, I'm Jared's mother, Sharon Padalecki."
Jensen opened his eyes wide, shaking her hand. "Hello, Mrs. Padskalecki," he said her name as best he could. "I'm Jensen Ackles and this is my momma, Donna."
Jared hid his giggle behind a paw, knowing everybody had trouble with their name. He looked at Jensen's mom and politely held out his right paw to her. "I'm Jared Padalecki, ma'am. I like Jensen's Batman."
"I've met your mama, Jensen," Mrs. Padalecki said. "She and I have been talking while you and Jared were getting candy. Would you like to trick-or-treat with my son?"
"Yes, ma'am, I would love to trick-or-treat with Jared. He's my new friend," Jensen said, beaming at Jared's mother.
"Well, hello there, Jared. Thank you... Jensen was very determined to be the best Batman. And aren't you a cute puppy?"
Mrs. Padalecki smiled, melting in the face of the intense green eyes and the declaration of friendship with her son. "Well, I'm sure Jared will be very happy to be your friend."
Jared giggled and said, "I'm Odie. Mama made him for me. See his tongue?" He wiggled the red cloth at her.
Donna Ackles chuckled delightedly. "It is certainly a good red tongue," she said, utterly charmed by the little boy. She turned to Sharon with a smile. "Are you certain? It would be nice to get Mackenzie home to bed. She was not nearly as ready for this as Jared is."
Jensen shifted from foot to foot. "Please, I promise to be really good."
Mrs. Padalecki laughed and said, "My little boy is nothing but a bundle of energy. I'd be delighted to escort Jensen, too." She smiled over at the little Batman. "And I know Jared will be happy for the company."
Jared looked at Mrs. Ackles pleadingly, wanting to go with Jensen very badly.
"Please, Momma," Jensen begged, eye lashes fluttering behind his mask. He gripped his hands together, treat bag swinging wildly.
Donna smile and stroked her hand over Jensen's head, unable to say no to her little boy, who'd not shown so much enthusiasm since their move. "Of course, baby. You guys look at your candy, and I'll work out the details with Sharon."
Jared jumped in the air with a little squealed, "Yay!" and reached for Jensen's hand. "We can look with my lamp." He fumbled to take his plastic flashlight out from under his costume.
Jensen grinned and then moved to the lawn between the sidewalk and the street, dropping onto the ground and rustling around in his treat bag. He waited for Jared to get the light settled and grinned at his friend.
Donna chuckled again and looked at Sharon. "As long as you are certain, I'll drop Mackenzie back at home and then come meet you."
"We'll continue on this block. I was thinking of taking Jay to Pilgrim Way next, unless Jensen has already gone that way," Sharon said.
"No, we haven't. How about I meet you at the end of Pilgrim?" Donna smiled at Sharon, knowing her from school functions even though none of their kids were really quite of the same age. "I shouldn't be all that long."
Sharon nodded and said, "That'll be fine. Most of the houses give out candy, so it'll take awhile to get around the block."
Jared turned on the light and aimed it so they could see their candy. He carefully emptied his pumpkin and began to divide out the candy into little piles.
Jensen tipped out his bag too and started to make different piles of stuff. There were things he knew that his dad would like, things he knew that Mackenzie would want and the stuff that he liked. Everything else went in a larger pile... he'd eat it if it was there, but if his new friend wanted it, that was better.
"Do you like Fizzbums?" Jared asked, pointing at a large collection of Fizzbombs he had in his discard pile.
"Yeah, I love the fizzy ones... they tickle my tongue," Jensen said, grinning ear to ear. "Do you like these?" He held up a handful of brightly colored Pixie Stix.
"Oooh," Jared said and bounced. "May we trade?" He picked up all the Fizzbombs and held them out.
Jensen grinned and held out his bag. "Put those in mine and then I'll put the Pixie Stix in your pumpkin."
Jared bit his lower lip and carefully put the Fizzbombs into Jensen's bag. "There."
"Thank you," Jensen remembered to say before he scooped up the Pixie Stix. "Okay, hold out the pumpkin."
"Thank you," Donna said, looking down at the boys with great fondness.
Jared held out his pumpkin with a big grin. "Here, Jensen."
Sharon smiled at them, too. "My Jay is good with other kids. He loves everyone."
"Jensen is usually really shy. He hasn't made many friends since we moved here," Donna admitted, smiling at how Jensen was treating Jared.
"There you go," Jensen said, dropping the Pixie Stix inside. "What else do you like?"
"Um, well, which pile is for trade?" Jared asked, looking at all of Jensen's candy with big eyes.
"Moving is hard," Sharon said with a small nod. "I'm glad my job and Gerald's have been steady since we got here."
"These are for my dad," Jensen said indicating the pile of Hershey's Kisses, before he pointed at the pile of odds and ends. "Those are for Mack... my baby sister."
Donna nodded. "Yeah, I think Alan and I should be settled again for awhile now. Both Josh and Mackenzie are fine, but I have been worrying about Jensen."
"He seems like a fine boy," Sharon said. "I'm sure he'll settle in and find more friends in no time."
Jared grinned and said, "Jeff's too cool for trickrtreat now, but I save him some stuff. And dad likes the sourballs. They make my mouth funny." He stuck out his tongue.
"You don't like them?" Jensen asked. "They make my tongue funny too, but I like it." He dug through a few more piles. Do you like Tootsie Rolls?"
Jared wrinkled his little nose, but said, "Mama likes them." He considered his discard pile for a fair trade. "Maybe for some taffy stuff?"
Jensen smiled at Jared. "Sure, I love the taffy stuff."
"I hope he will," Donna said, with another smile. "See you in a little bit. And thank you, again." Turning to Jensen, she crouched down. "I'll see you in a little bit, sweetie."
"Bye, Momma," Jensen said with a smile for his mother, happy that he was able to stay with his new friend.
"See you later, Donna," Sharon said and then called to her charges, "Shall we keep going?"
"Coming, mama!" Jared cried and put the taffy carefully in Jensen's bag. He held out his pumpkin again for the tootsie rolls.
Handing over the Tootsie Rolls, Jensen then scooped all the rest of his candy back into his bag before he helped Jared to put all of his candy back in his pumpkin. "I think we're ready, Mrs. Padskalecki."
Jared tugged lightly at Jensen's cape after putting his candy away. "Padalecki," he whispered to Jensen and smiled. He held out his hand for Jensen to take.
Sharon smiled and said, "Good. The next house always gives good candy."
"Pad-a-lecki?" Jensen asked, smiling at Jared and shifting his bag of candy to hold Jared's hand.
Jared took Jensen's gloved hand in his pawed one and nodded. "Yeah. Mrs. Garry says Pedalacky," he said with a giggle. "She teaches kinergarten at my school."
Jensen chuckled. "I like it, but it's a little hard to say." He squeezed Jared's hand, swinging their arms while they walked to the next house.
Jared paused at the foot of the next house and looked up at the front door with a little fear. It was all dark, except for the occasional flash of light, and spooky noises floated down the walk. "Oh."
"S'okay, Jay. Remember, I'm Batman!" Jensen threw his hand in the air. "I protect you."
Jared grinned a little, still nervous, but said, "Okay, Batman." He swallowed hard and squeezed Jensen's fingers.
Jensen tightened his grip on Jared's hand and led him up the walkway toward the front door. "We can turn back any time you want, Jay."
Jared firmed up his mouth, not wanting to be a baby. "'S just sounds," he said. "And mama said they have good candy."
"Well then we can't miss it, right?" Jensen walked up the walk alongside Jared, holding his hand and leading him up the stairs to the door. "You want to knock or you want me to?"
Jared stared at the spooky face on the door, eyes wide and then looked at Jensen. He wanted to be brave, to prove to his new friend that he was a big boy. "I can," he said, voice wobbly. He took a step forward, still holding on to Jensen's hand and rapped on the door with the paw holding his pumpkin.
"Boo!" someone yelled as the door flew open, and Jared screeched and nearly fell over.
Jensen jumped with Jared, laughing in nervousness and shock. He held Jared tight, pulling him in close and wrapping one arm around him, which also wrapped him in one of Jensen's wings. "Trick-or-treat," he said, in a much smaller voice than usual.
A big man dressed in a Frankenstein's monster costume stepped out, holding a huge basket of candy. He dug out a large handful and held it out to Jared, who cowered in Jensen's wing. "Candy," he moaned.
Trembling, Jared managed to hold out his pumpkin, keeping as far away from the monster as possible, and murmured a tiny, "Thank you," as the candy dropped in.
The man turned to Jensen and held out another handful. "Candy, Batmaaaan."
Holding out his bag, Jensen smiled up at the Frankenstein. "Thanks," he said, holding Jared snugly against him. "You're cool."
"Cool," Jared echoed, though he still trembled.
Frakenstein's monster boomed a laugh and said, "Happy Halloween," before closing the door.
Jared pressed against Jensen and whispered, "He was scary."
"Yeah, he was really big, wasn't he?" Jensen unfurled his wing and turned them to go back down the stairs. "You did good, though. You were brave."
Jared felt warm with Jensen's praise and beamed up at him. "I had you to protect me," he said. "You hold my hand good."
Jensen beamed. "I will always protect you, Jay. You're my friend." Leading them down the steps and walkway, Jensen smiled at Jared's mother. "You were right, lots of good candy there. And Jay was so brave."
Sharon smiled and patted Jared on the head. "Did you thank Jensen for taking such good care of you, baby?"
Jared nodded vigorously, but turned to Jensen and said, "Thank you, Jensen." He beamed and began to head for the next house, Jensen in tow.
