Story 1 Three years later.
Jared loped up the walk to Jensen's door, waving a goodbye to his dad in the car. His spurs jingled with every step, and he tugged up his jeans to prevent them from sliding down his slim waist. Holding the same pumpkin he always carried for Halloween, he knocked on the door and eagerly waited for Jensen.
Jensen opened the door with a huge grin on his face, letting Jared in and practically dancing in excitement. He was almost a mirror image of Jared's costume, but in different colors and with items that fit him a little bit better. Jensen had grown a bit over the summer and was still getting used to his longer legs and arms. "Gonna be so much fun, Jay. Let's go see how we look in the mirror."
Jared grinned big at his friend, happy to see him in his cowboy outfit, too. He dashed with him to the mirror and began to strike poses, pulling out his guns or tipping his hat and saying, "Howdy."
Giggling, Jensen joined in the fun and then stopped when he heard his mother coming down the stairs. He rolled his eyes and then nudged Jared. "Mack's coming too... and she's a princess this year." Another eye roll at silly little girls, and Jensen was scrambling to find his candy bag before his mother was ready to head out.
Jared grinned at the idea of Mack as a princess and said, "Little girls always want to be princesses. Not as cool as cowboys. Bang bang!" He fake shot his gun at a vase.
"Not nearly as cool as cowboys." Jensen strode around the room in his chaps and spurs, trying to make as much noise as possible with them, though he knew better than to go near the nice floor in the dining room. He'd already been yelled at once for playing around in there.
Your spurs are sweet," Jared said and eyed them almost enviously. "Can I see your guns?"
Jensen grinned, turning his leg so he could see his spurs before he nodded at Jared. "Yeah, of course." He unholstered the guns and handed them to Jared.
Jared took them and said, "Wow. Are these the ones that were at Discoverys? Those were cool!"
"Yeah! Mom got them for my costume," Jensen beamed. He'd never imagined his mom would surprise him, but sometimes she was just so awesome. "I like yours, too; you're really good with them."
"I've been practicing," Jared said and drew them as quick as he could. "Bang! Bang!" he yelled, carefully pointing them away from Jensen.
Jensen whooped. "See! That was awesome!" He patted Jared on the shoulder and then hugged him. "Mom!" Jensen yelled, again almost dancing with anticipation. "Can we go yet?"
Mackenzie Ackles pattered down the stairs in her all-pink fairy outfit. Her crown and wings were partially askew, but she carried herself as regally as she knew how. "I'm ready, mom!"
"Finally," Jensen whined, though he smiled at Mackenzie right after. "You look good, Mack," he said reluctantly, remembering how his momma told him he had to be extra nice to her.
Donna walked down the stairs slower than her daughter, but was smiling at all of the kids. She was proud of the way that Jensen had reacted, feeling one of those rare moments parents get when their lessons hit home. "Hello Jared, are you ready to go trick-or-treat?"
"Yes, ma'am," Jared said politely. He smiled at Mack. "You're a good fairy princess."
Mack giggled and pressed into her mom's legs. "Thank you, Jared."
"Yay!" Jensen yelled, twirling his guns and tucking them into the holsters. "Hey Mack, here's your treat bag." He handed the orange one with a jack o' lantern face on it to her, while he held the black ghost one.
Donna smiled. "Jensen, inside voice please... until we get out there."
Mack took the pumpkin and said, "Yeah, Jen, speak soft. Yer uncouth."
Jared covered his mouth on a giggle at Mack and tried just to look polite.
Jensen scowled at his sister, crossing his arms and vowing to ignore her for the rest of the night. "C'mon, Jay, let's wait on the porch."
Jared bumped Jensen gently as they walked outside and said, "Sisters are tough, huh? I'm glad I don't have one."
"Yeah, you're lucky," Jensen said. "She can be fun sometimes, but not most of the time."
Jared wrinkled his nose at the ideas of girls in general. "Chad and Jamie were kissing in the hall during lunch. It was gross."
Jensen wrinkled his nose. "Kissing? Really?" He didn't like the thought of that. "Don't like girls, but Josh does. He's all googly about this girl, Ellie, at his school."
"I know! Jeff has a girlfriend! It's so lame. They spend all their time kissing and stuff." Jared gagged and hopped off the porch.
Hopping off the porch, Jensen joined Jared and kicked at the walkway. "Yeah, I think Josh wants to kiss Ellie too."
"I never want to kiss girls," Jared declared. "Promise never to kiss girls with me, Jen?"
Jensen tiled his head and thought about it. "Yeah," he said easily, grinning at Jared. "I promise."
"Pinkie swear?" Jared asked, extending his finger as Donna and Mack emerged from the house.
"Pinkie swear," Jensen agreed, holding up his pinkie and linking it with Jared's. A huge smile wreathed his face.
"Sweet," Jared said and then grabbed Jensen's hand, tugging him to follow after Donna and Mack. "Betcha the Wilsons will have awesome decorations again."
Jensen held Jared's hand while they walked, talking about cowboys and Halloween. He talked about which candy he wanted this year, especially now that Mackenzie could get her own and promised Jared he could still have any and all Pixie Stix.
Jared paused when they came to the end of Ford Street and met up with a group of older kids, all Jensen's age. He ducked his head and scuffed his toe, never comfortable with them the way he was with Jensen.
"Hey Bobby!" Jensen said, waving with his free hand and smiling. "Where're you guys headed?" He knew most of the group from school.
Bobby grinned at Jensen and said, "We're going to First and Pine. There's a cool buncha decorated houses there. Want to come?"
Jared hid a little behind Jensen and hoped his friend wouldn't want to go with the older kids, even though the place sounded cool.
Jensen shook his head. "Aw, that sounds like fun. Mom'd never let me go on my own, and we're going trick-or-treating tonight." He grinned at his friends. "But maybe she'll take us over later to check out the decorations."
Bobby nodded with an apologetic grin. "See ya at school. Sorry your stuck with the babies."
"I'm not... I mean." Jensen stopped trying to figure out what to say. He wasn't stuck, and Jared wasn't a baby, even if Mackenzie was, but Jensen had this funny feeling in his stomach that his school friends wouldn't like him if they knew he hung out with Jared a lot. "See you at school," he said and then turned around when his mother called to them.
Jared blinked at Jensen and offered a small smile. He didn't know what to say, so he put his head down and started walking up the block with Mrs. Ackles and Mack.
Jensen walked behind Jared, hands still entwined and he felt bad about the way Jared was slumped over. He felt bad for not saying anything and bad that his other friends might not like him if he said he liked Jared. Unused to feeling so torn, Jensen said the first thing that came to him, "Hey, Jay, you wanna ask your mom if you can sleep over?"
Jared lifted his head and looked at Jensen with his big eyes. "May I?" he asked, mood rising again.
"Yeah! We can split up our candy and play cowboys and everything," Jensen said, excitement in his voice and a smile on his face. No matter what his other friends said, he liked Jared.
Jared's smile lit up his face and he bounced in his step, as they turned up the first walk way. "It'll be awesome!"
Jensen grinned, relief flowing through him that Jared was happy and smiling again. "So awesome...and maybe Momma will make us french toast in the morning with lotsa cinnamon!"
"Your mom makes the best French toast," Jared gushed and licked his lips. They reached the front door, and Mack knocked primly, making Jared grin at Jensen.
Shaking his head, Jensen let go of Jared's hand so that he could hold his bag open. When the door opened, he let Mackenzie say her 'trick-or-treat' first before chiming in with his own. Once the candy was dropped into his bag, Jensen turned and headed down the stairs again, waiting for Jared to come down after him.
Jared bounded after Jensen, spurs jingling. "They gave me Snickers! How bout you?"
"I think I got a Milky Way," Jensen said, peering into his bag and then nodding. He reached out for Jared's hand again, swinging them wide.
Jared took Jensen's hand and then said softly, "You don't have to hold my hand if you don't want anymore, Jen. I know you're practically grown-up."
"Do you not want to hold my hand?" Jensen asked, still holding onto Jared's hand, but looking at him with his eyebrows raised and a slight frown.
"I know you're friends might think it's weird." Jared hung his head a little. "I like it."
Jensen tightened his hand. "I like it, too," he said and nudged Jared's side before dragging him along to the next house.
Jared laughed and ran with Jensen, their spurs jingling together. "Always want to be like this, Jen. 'K?"
"Yeah, just you and me! Forever." Jensen grinned over his shoulder, tangling their fingers together. and squeezing his hand.

Another three years
Jared walked down the block with Sandy, Chad and Sophia, all of them dressed as zombies. They lurched along, giggling and heading for the Wilson's house, since they still gave out the best treats. And then Jared looked up and saw Jensen across the way, walking with a group of his friends. His laughter stopped cold, and he felt the same deep pit in his heart he always did when he managed to catch a glimpse of his former best friend.
Jensen, dressed as Clyde, walked away from the Wilson house, arm slung around Beth's shoulder. His girlfriend was dressed as Bonnie since, like most of their friends, they'd done a couple's costume. He nuzzled her temple, whispered a joke in her ear and then turned to his friends. "We gonna hit the haunted house over on Maplethorpe?"
Jared blinked back a few tears and forced his attention back to his other friends. They were all looking at him with sympathy, knowing of his former friendship with the older boy. None of them knew how close, though Sandy guessed. He managed a weak grin for them and picked up the shambling pace again.
Chis nodded, arm around his girlfriend Sarah, the two dressed as Napoleon and Josephine. "Yeah, they have lots of dark corners," he teased, waggling his eyebrows and tickling Sarah's waist. Turning to see where they were, Chris rolled his eyes at the group of kids shambling down the street, causing Jensen to turn and look.
Jensen's eyes widened in surprise and a small pang of longing shot through his chest, when he saw Jared having fun with his friends. He'd not seen him in awhile and hadn't even thought to call him about Halloween.
Jared cast one last look over his at Jensen and startled a little when he caught his eyes. His expression tightened, and he turned his eyes front. He refused to look back again.
Jensen sighed, turned away, but looked back over his shoulder once, before Beth called his name to involve him in the discussion of haunted houses versus getting some food and heading to the dance at the high school. He voted for haunted house and then food, pushing thoughts of Jared away when his girlfriend pressed up against him.
